This hands-on course, studies skills needed for metal shop knowledge/career. Students will be covering topics of shop safety, linear measurement, SMAW (Arc Welding), OAC (Oxy-Act Cutting), OAW (Oxy-Acetylene Welding), CAC-A (Air Carbon Arc Cutting), GMAW (MIG Welding), PAC (Plasma Cutting), and construction of metal project when completion of prior skills. Students will be working with a variety of power tools in the shop. If time permits, it is the student’s responsibility to come up with their own project, approved by the instructor. (Project material will need to be purchased by the student) Dual credit (WELD 150) through TVCC is offered with this class.
COURSE OUTCOMES
1. Safety setup and operate an Oxy-Acetylene welding and/or cutting system, which will be
assessed through observation, written and performance tests.
2. Make welds in the 1F, 2F, 3F, 3G, and 4Fpositions to industry standards using the OAW
process, which will be assessed through observations, and performance tests to industry
standards.
3. Safety setup and operate a Plasma Arc Cutting system to produce finished cuts to industry
standards, which will be assessed through written and performance tests.
4. Make welds in the 1F, 2F, 3F, 3G, 4Fand 4G positions to industry standards using the SMAW
process, which will be assessed through observations, and performance tests to industry
standards.
