A mentor is required for all Mica Mountain High School (MMHS) Senior Exit Projects that include career shadowing. Each student must select a mentor who has professional experience in the career identified on the approved Shadowing Parent Consent and SEP Committee Approval Form. The mentor’s role is to provide real-world insight, guidance related to the student’s critical issue, and support throughout the project.
Mentors may not be immediate or extended family members.
When choosing a mentor, students should consider the following:
Does the mentor have the time to support me throughout the project?
Can the mentor provide meaningful insight that will help with my research paper or project?
Will the mentor offer professional guidance, support, and encouragement?
Is the mentor able to verify the hours I complete during the shadowing experience?
Mentors are professionals with primary responsibilities to their workplace and clients. Students are expected to communicate respectfully, participate fully, and plan ahead to allow time for meetings and feedback. A mentor may end the mentoring relationship if the student is not meeting regularly or is not actively engaged in the project.
If a mentoring relationship ends for any reason, the student must notify the SEP Coordinators immediately.
Please remember: the responsibility for completing the Senior Exit Project rests with the student, not the mentor. Careful planning, professionalism, and accountability are essential to a successful experience.
