Topology
at
Siyakhula
The two-day topology workshop within the Siyakhula festival will run from 18-19 March 2024. Under the banner Topology for Tomorrow the workshop is a celebration of topology past, present and future with a focus on global trends in topology and its applications. We invite all topologists - current and future - to join us for two days of topology and to take part in the entire Siyakhula festival.
There will be a number of talks on the methods and applications of Topological Data Analysis, but other aspects of topology and its intersection with science and society will also be addressed.
Invited speakers:
Ulrike Tillmann (University of Oxford and Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge)
Keynote Lecture: Seeing data through the eyes of a topologistGillian Grindstaff (University of Oxford)
Topological data analysis for natural and social geographyMorten Brun (University of Bergen)
Density Dependent Persistent HomologyBruce Bartlett (Stellenbosch University)
The mathematics of topological quantum computingDharmanand Baboolal (University of Kwazulu Natal)
Causal structure of spacetime
Workshop sessions:
Balázs Szendrői (University of Vienna)
Symmetry and Topology in Islamic ArtCerene Rathilal (University of KwaZulu Natal) and Vivien Visaya (University of Johannesburg Johannesburg)
Topological Data Analysis: Data has shape, and shape has meaning
"Topology for Tomorrow" is part of an ongoing project to build a cohort of future topology researchers in South Africa, sharing and expanding the country's long-standing expertise in Topology, working together and building further international partnerships. The first workshop "T4T2022" was held at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in December 2022 with a follow-up event "T4T2023" in December 2023. These workshops were aimed principally at graduate students and young academics. The Topology at Siyakhula event aims to bring together a broad cross-section of the South African topology community within the festival of mathematics.
