Things to do
Zevenwacht is conveniently located between Stellenbosch and Cape Town. There are fun things to do at Zevenwacht itself (see above), but if you'd like to venture out, here are some tips for experiences in and around Cape Town.
Outdoors
Hike in Newlands Forest. When it's really hot out, this is a great way to enjoy some fresh air. There are many trails, of varying difficulty, so you can choose whether to take a relaxed walk by the river, or hike all the way up Devil's Peak (or something in between). We love combining a hike in the forest with a visit to Forester's Arms for some pub grub and a beer. If you're going on a morning hike, then swing by The Gardener's Cottage on your way to the forest for a croissant and a takeaway coffee.
Walk along the Sea Point Promenade to Green Point Park (West Gate) and stop for ice cream at The Creamery on the way. Alternatively, start at Giovanni's Deli, where you can go DIY on the most delicious bagel you've ever eaten, grab a coffee, and walk to Green Point Park via the East Gate.
If you love the beach, then going to Camps Bay and Clifton are always great fun. Try Bakoven Beach for something more secluded.
Cape Town's botanical garden Kirstenbosch comes highly recommended.
If you're keen for day trip around the Peninsula, why not hit Hout Bay, Noordhoek, Simon's Town, and Kalk Bay? There is no shortage of great places to enjoy super fresh beer-battered fish and chips on this route, and if you're into antiquing, then leave a good couple of hours for Kalk Bay.
Combine a hike with sundowners (bring your own) on Lion's Head.
Other activities
In Woodstock, visit the Old Biscuit Mill and Woodstock Brewery.
In Observatory, have breakfast at Honeybun, and visit the amazing second hand bookstore, OBZ Books. You can also shop second hand clothing and antiques on Lower Main Rd, and stop for a slice of creative cake at Mango Ginger. We also love the sushi at 1890 House, and just chilling out with some drinks and dinner at A Touch of Madness. If you still haven't had enough, then why not shoot some pool at Stones? Obz is a special place.
Several nights each week, The Galileo hosts open air screenings of favourite movies at several great outdoor venues around Cape Town, including Kirstenbosch botanical gardens and the V&A Waterfront. You can pack a picnic, show up two hours before sunset, hang out, then watch a movie under the stars.
The Zeits-MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) is really something to experience! The museum building is a masterfully converted grain silo at the V&A Waterfront's Silo District. Seven floors (and a basement revealing some of the silo's original mechanical features) show permanent and temporary exhibitions by artists from all over Africa. Combine a visit to the museum with drinks at the Silo Hotel's Rooftop Bar (take note: booking is necessary).
Visit the Company's Garden right in the heart of the city, see St George's Cathedral, and visit the South African National Art Gallery, the South African Jewish Museum, and the Iziko Slave Lodge.
Visit the market at Greenmarket Square, which is also the departure point for various free walking tours around the city (please tip your tour guide!).
Bo-Kaap - need we say more?
If you're a lover of jazz music, then definitely visit The Piano Bar.
Further recommendations for dining & drinks
Don't leave Cape Town without trying a Gatsby! Stop in Athlone on your way into Cape Town to get your jaws around one of the best original Gatsbys. Remember: Gatsbys are meant to be shared (or not!).
We LOVE the cafeteria-style Eastern Food Bazaar, where you can experience incredibly delicious regional Indian, Chinese, and Turkish street food. The portions are very generous, and seating is available upstairs. The Bazaar is just a 10min walk from the Company's Garden, so consider swinging by for lunch or dinner after visiting the inner-city sites.
Truth Coffee has a steam punk vibe and will serve you a cuppa that has been brewed with scientific precision.
Publik Wine Bar is recommended for those who like to sip wine in low key, intimate spaces, by candlelight, over a charcuterie board.
The Dark Horse is a favourite, buzzing bar, and right down the road from the quirky and magical Bombay Bicycle Club restaurant.
