The South African University Law Clinics Association (SAULCA), previously known as the Association of University Legal Aid Institutions (AULAI), was established as a voluntary association of South African university law clinics. The idea for the establishment of the Association was born from the expressed wish of university law clinics to establish a united, professional organisation which would advocate a shared vision, mission and objectives of the promotion and preservation of human rights and constitutional and democratic principles by providing high quality clinical legal education programmes at universities in South Africa and granting indigent communities access to justice. In addition, SAULCA provides member law clinics support and guidance which assists the clinics in attaining their goals.
In adherence to SAULCA's vision, mission and objectives, SAULCA, in collaboration with its member university law clinics, continues to investigate and explore new methods and processes which aim to improve clinical legal education and access to justice.
SAULCA has hosted a number of workshops since its establishment to exchange knowledge and ideas on the improvement of clinical legal education. These workshops were arranged by SAULCA and conducted by clinicians based at South African university law clinics.
A few of our Clinicians (Adams, D., Rippenaar, S. Pillay, G., and Jassiem, S.) contributed to chapters in the book Bodenstein (ed.) Law Clinics and the Clinical Law Movement in South Africa (Juta 2018):
· Different methods of teaching and learning.
· The management and administration of law clinics.
