Dr Katleho Daniel Makatjane is a Lecturer in the Department of Statistics and Population Studies at the University of the Western Cape. He is an applied statistician, quantitative business and risk analyst whose work focuses on developing innovative statistical methodologies to solve complex real-world problems. His expertise spans statistical modelling, forecasting, machine learning, financial econometrics, causal inference, and data science, with applications in finance, energy systems, public health, and the social sciences.

His research bridges statistical theory with computational intelligence, developing robust predictive models that improve decision-making under uncertainty. His current research interests include extreme value theory, probabilistic forecasting, explainable artificial intelligence, Bayesian statistics, hybrid deep learning models, financial risk modelling, electricity demand forecasting, renewable energy analytics, and data-driven policy development.

Dr Makatjane has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers published in internationally recognised journals and proceedings. His research has contributed to advances in financial risk modelling, forecasting, sentiment analysis, fraud detection, and statistical learning. Through collaborations with researchers across Africa and beyond, he continues to develop innovative methodologies that combine classical statistics with modern artificial intelligence. This progression has provided him with a strong foundation in statistical theory, computational statistics, quantitative risk analysis, business analytics, and machine learning.

As an educator, Dr Makatjane is committed to fostering an inclusive, student-centred learning environment that promotes critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving. He currently teaches Time Series and Forecasting and Statistical Distribution Theory, integrating theoretical concepts with practical applications using modern computational tools such as SAS, R and Python. His teaching philosophy emphasises active learning, evidence-based instruction, and the preparation of students with the quantitative and computational skills required to address contemporary challenges in academia, industry, and government.

Beyond teaching and research, Dr Makatjane actively contributes to the statistical community through scholarly collaborations, conference participation, and peer review for international scientific journals. He remains committed to advancing statistical education, promoting interdisciplinary research, and developing innovative data-driven solutions that have meaningful societal impact.

His academic journey began with a Certificate in Statistics from the National University of Lesotho before earning his Bachelor of Commerce, Honours, Master's, and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics from North-West University, South Africa. He is a member of the South African Statistical Association (SASA), the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), and the South African Monitoring and Evaluation Association (SAMEA). Through his teaching, research, and professional engagement, he continues to advance statistics, data science, and quantitative research in Africa and beyond.
