This section (SoR) must include a comprehensive overview of your research contributions and achievements, demonstrating your sustained engagement in scholarly activities. It is organized into four key areas: (1) Sustained Research Outputs ; (2) Impact of Publications ; (3) Grants & Research Projects; and (4) Postgraduate Supervision. Below is a structured outline to consider for an effective presentation of your SoR.
Introduction to Research Philosophy
o Commitment to Engaged Scholarship: Define your commitment to Engaged Scholarship and its significance in higher education.
o Transition from Mode 1 to Mode 2: Explain the shift from traditional Mode 1 (disciplinary silos) to Mode 2 (transdisciplinary, socially responsive research).
Principles of Mode 2 and Engaged Scholarship
o Mode 2 Characteristics: Describe how Mode 2 emphasizes problem-solving, transdisciplinary approaches, and co-creation of knowledge.
o Integration of Learning, Teaching, and Research: Discuss how this approach integrates research with teaching, community engagement, and service.
Engaged Research Principles
o Ethical & Inclusive Partnerships: Explain your approach to building equitable partnerships with communities and stakeholders.
o Participatory Methods: Detail the participatory methods you use to involve community members in the research process. o Social Justice Focus: Describe how social justice guides your research.
o Impact-Oriented: Explain how you measure success by the tangible impacts on communities.
o Reflective Practice: Discuss how continuous reflection and dialogue are integral to your research practice.
Vision for Engaged Research
o Dynamic Academic Environment: Describe your vision for creating an inclusive academic environment with fluid boundaries between the university and external partners.
Below is an example with some suggested goal pointers to consider that drives your research vision: o Example Research Goals:
Example Research Goals:
1. Empower Stakeholders: Empower staff, students, and community partners.
2. Advance Knowledge: Advance knowledge and practice.
3. Influence Policy: Influence policy and practice.
4. Foster Growth: Foster academic and community growth.
5. Promote Sustainability: Promote sustainability and equity.
Strategies for Realizing Vision
Below is an example with some suggested strategies to consider that drive your research vision and goals.
o Establish Collaborative Networks: Discuss strategies for building partnerships with various stakeholders.
o Secure Funding: Outline your approach to securing funding for engaged research.
o Mentor and Train: Explain how you mentor and train the next generation of researchers.
o Disseminate Research: Describe your methods for sharing research findings broadly.
o Evaluate and Reflect: Detail how you evaluate and reflect on research outcomes and impact.
Alignment with NRF Framework
o NRF Framework Overview: Provide an overview of the NRF Framework to Advance the Societal and Knowledge Impact of Research.
o Engaged Research Pathway: Explain how your research aligns with the NRF’s engaged research pathway and enablers.
o Example: Include the SoE-SI KMS web portal project as a case study of how you measure societal impact aligned with the NDP: Vision 2030 and the SDGs. (See web portal: https://www.soesi.uwc.ac.za/sikms/transformative).
Research Focus Areas
List up to four (4) key research Focus Areas. Provide a short descriptive paragraph for each foci and upload for each foci some supporting evidence (reports, policies, articles etc) where applicable.
● Supporting Documentation
o Upload NRF Framework and Engaged Research: Include the NRF framework and documents related to engaged research pathways and enablers.
● Summary and Reflection
o Overall Impact: Summarize how your engaged research philosophy and practices contribute to societal transformation and the broader academic community.
o Future Directions: Reflect on future goals for enhancing the impact of your research.
i. Sustained research output
This section lists your primary research outputs, including publications, conference papers, and other scholarly works. It highlights significant contributions that showcase you sustained scholarly activity and the breadth of you research.
