We call learners into our space when problematic interactions (micro/aggressions) occur. We do this because 1) we believe in all people’s capacity / journey to learn, 2) we want to build on developing relationships with our students to support learning, so as not to risk learning being halted, 3) we want to model practices that should be enacted with MS/HS students, and 4) we believe that taking a humanizing approach to addressing oppressive actions is an act of social justice.
As we call the STEP community in, we model the instructional cycle (plan practice, enact practice, reflect on practice) that is constantly in motion in our program, especially in regards to how we reflect upon and improve our own practice.
We as STEP instructors acknowledge that we are positioned with power and authority and it is our responsibility to call students in in order to ensure learning, safety, and participation in our community. We also open ourselves up to be called in.
