Transportation in the International District
Transportation is a major asset to the community living in the International District. There are a wide variety of options so no matter what there budget or the time of day they need to travel there is an option. This area boasts multiple forms of public transportation such as buses that while walking through can constantly be seen moving past in either direction, streetcars that while similar to normal buses don't stop as often thus allowing for a faster means to get where your going and the light rail which can be accessed for either entering or exiting the International District. The community in this area seems very pleased by the options they have as many people can be seen using any of these forms of transportation all throughout the day. Other options for transportation are the many bikes and scooters available for rent that can be seen sitting on the street along with driving which I can not personally recommend as parking there is very expensive and limited. If none of these options are favorable for a person and the distance they have to go is not overly far there is also the option of walking, there are crosswalks at nearly every intersection along with lights on the sidewalk making it a viable and safe option even at night.
The bus system in the International district is complex and allows you to go virtually anywhere in the entire area. A single ride adult ticket costs $2.75. Some parts of the area even have there own lane for buses which can be seen in the third image. The wide reach of the buses and relatively low cost mean that compared to driving the bus system is a great option.
The streetcar runs directly through the street in its own lane and works similar to a normal bus in that you get on at a designated stop. The streetcar is however a slightly cheaper option coming in at $2.25 per adult ticket for a ride. Recently there have been talks of removing the streetcar as it is very expensive to operate however these have not panned out yet.
Driving in the International district is definitely one of the main ways people get around. There was a decent amount of traffic when we visited so it wont be the fastest method depending on the day. The fees to park on the street or in a garage there are also very high especially on the days of an event which can be seen in the second picture. Not the most viable option for an average person.
Both bikes and scooters can be seen all over the streets in the International district. By downloading the respective app and then paying a fee based on distance traveled a person can rent one of these for however long they require. They are very easy as you simply leave them wherever you are when you've arrived at your destination.
The light rail was a surprisingly easy method to get in and out of the International district. For moving between the different districts the light rail is very quick and comfortable when not fully crowded. A adult ticket roundtrip costs anywhere from $2.25-$3.50 depending on distance traveled so its relative to the cost of a bus ticket.
Navigating your way to a select destination in a busy area like the International district can sometimes be a struggle, especially on days when an event is occurring. On days like that or in a budget crunch walking is an excellent option. There are crosswalks at nearly every intersection along with lights for when walking at night.
Transportation is a vital part of any community. Without multiple viable options for it citizens will be unable to connect with each other in both a business sense along with general relationships. No matter how many health clinics or public parks are built if the general population of the neighborhood has no good way to access them they will go unused. The International district does a excellent job of making sure that there community can use all of the amazing resources they provide for them. Bus stops can be seen within a couple hundred feet of parks and it is the great lengths such as that the local government has gone to that ensure transportation there is a asset and not a barrier.
I would rate the International district a 3/4. There are many different options available to the community that are both affordable and fast. A lot of infrastructure has been put into the district they really gives it a fell of being connected. Homelessness however is a issue and removes a point.
