Smarter Bites: An AI nutrition companion that helps college students eat healthier through context-aware meal suggestions instead of calorie tracking.
Problem Statement
College students often struggle to eat in ways that support their energy, focus, and overall well-being. This problem is not caused by a lack of nutrition information, since advice about calories, macros, meal planning, and healthy eating is widely available. Instead, the real problem is the gap between knowing what to do and being able to act on it consistently (Abraham, Noriega, Shin, 2018). For many students, food decisions are shaped by tight budgets, limited time, stress, inconsistent schedules, etc. As a result, students often default to convenient options that may be cheap or fast but leave them feeling tired, unfocused, or dissatisfied.
This problem is especially important because eating habits directly affect students’ daily lives. Poor nutrition can make it harder to concentrate in class, maintain energy throughout the day, manage stress, and feel physically well. These habits built now also impact how the students lead the rest of their lives (Deshpande, Basil, Basil, 2009). Students may want to make healthier choices, but the pressures of college life make those choices difficult to maintain. Our user research supported this pattern. Both interview participants identified money and time as major barriers to eating well, and one participant stated, “If it’s tedious, I won’t use it.” This shows that students need more than information. They need a solution that fits naturally into their routines.
Existing nutrition apps such as Yazio and MyFitnessPal do not fully address this problem. These tools often rely on detailed food logging, daily tracking, and calorie counting, which require consistent effort and discipline. For busy students, this process can feel tedious. These tools also lack awareness of student specific contexts, such as dining halls, dorm kitchens, shared apartments, limited grocery budgets, and quick meals between classes.
Because of this, the problem is best understood as an adaptive challenge rather than a purely technical one. They need support that responds to their life constraints, reduces effort, and helps them make better choices within the limits of student life. A student-centered food tracking and recommendation tool matters because it can help students bridge the gap between intention and action in a way that feels sustainable.
