Survivors + Allies In Law:
Our Mission
Survivors + Allies In Law (SAIL) is a coalition of law students and allies that advocate for and with survivors of sexual violence, sexual harassment, domestic violence, trafficking, and other forms of interpersonal and/or gender-based violence. SAIL elevates survivor concerns at the campus, city, state, regional, and national level to improve existing resources, services, and communications available to survivors.
To accomplish these goals, SAIL pursues a multi-pronged strategy centered around empowering survivors with education and community, volunteering in the greater Seattle area to provide community service in collaboration with partner organizations, and engaging in activism to change and update policies to advance survivor justice.
SAIL was founded in December 2024 and is registered as a student organization at the University of Washington - School of Law. SAIL is affiliated with and housed under Survivors + Allies (S+A) at UCLA. Learn more about Survivors + Allies here.
SAIL's Leadership Structure
A horizontal leadership structure is a collaborative leadership model that distributes leadership across a team; instead of having a vertical leadership structure with a president or executive, a horizontal structure empowers team members by decentralizing authority and equipping each team member with the autonomy to make decisions and take on leadership intiatives.
A horizontal leadership model enhances collaboration, gives all SAIL Executive Board members an active role in decision-making, and increase creativity by flattening hierarchies. This model promotes shared power, inclusivity, collaboration, a diversity of perspectives, and racial justice.
Our Executive Board membership is divided across 5 committees, and each board member sits on one of the committees. Our 5 committees are:
Administration Committee
Service Advocacy Committee
Policy Committee
Peer Education & Coalition Building Committee
Technology Committee
