My research passion is doing work that shifts power to and supports people in managing their health the way they want while respecting their autonomy, abilities, and values. I'm particularly interested in how this work intersects issues of inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and sovereignty (IDEAS). I use qualitative and mixed methods to understand deeply the problems that people face in managing their health. I use design methods as well other applicable computing methods, such as natural language processing, to develop new technologies that help address those problems as well as to assess how well those new technologies or even existing technologies work. I'm particularly interested in areas related to the healthcare experiences of transgender or gender diverse people; patient safety; accessibility in healthcare; mental health; and sexual, reproductive & menopausal healthcare.
If you are interested in this type of research and you are a prospective PhD student, I am accepting 1-2 new students for the 2025-2026 academic year. I can serve as the primary advisor for students in the Information School (iSchool) or Biomedical & Health Informatics. Please apply through either of those programs. If you are a member of a historically marginalized or underserved community and wanting to apply to the iSchool, please feel free to reach out to our iSchool Diversity Ambassadors program for support on your application. For fairness to all applicants, I now meet with applicants only as part of the admissions process to these programs, rather than before the admissions process. I also often serve on the advisory committee for students in the Human-Centered Design & Engineering program or the Computer Science & Engineering program.
If you are seeking a postdoc position and interested in this type of research, I advise postdocs through the Biomedical & Health Informatics National Library of Medicine Postdoctoral Fellowship. Note that eligibility for these fellowships is limited to US citizens and permanent residents. I do not currently have any grant-funded postdoctoral positions.
If you are a master's student or an undergraduate student who is interested in this type of research, I typically mentor indirectly through the PhD students or postdocs who are working with me. I recommend looking at their webpages, projects, or publications and reaching out to one of them whose work sounds interesting to you.
