COMMIT (COMmunity for Mathematics Inquiry in Teaching )
Since the summer of 2021, the Pacific Northwest has its own COMMIT Chapter under the national COMMIT network (COMMIT Network). We are proud to join a national movement to support the growth of regional communities of educators with interest in evidence-based teaching.
To us, Inquiry Based Teaching is understood on its broadest level, namely the use of any pedagogical approach that uses student-centered, active learning, inquiry-based, problem-based, or team-based, and more methods.
Who we are
This PNW (Pacific Northwest) group of educators from Washington and Oregon have come together in their shared interest in practicing evidence-based teaching approaches. We envision building and expanding a regional network of math teachers who share a desire to learn about student-centered inquiry (e.g., inquiry based learning, inquiry oriented instruction, inquiry based mathematics education, etc.), to support and/or receive support in their pedagogy, and to help learn and/or promote equity and anti-racism in their spheres of influence. More specifically, we strive for reaching a diverse community of math educators, who contribute to diversity through their own identities, the institutions they teach at, and the students they teach.
What we do
Our community has been meeting through Zoom for more than a year now. These meetings have either focused on specific topics such as reflections on online teaching and on student buy-in, or have served as social hours/teas in which we just shared our most recent teaching experiences. In the future, we hope to continue these online meetings, but also facilitate in-person workshops and seminars.
