These two community-engaged projects sought to examine the Educational Opportunity Gaps among two communities whose data historically and often are aggregated together — Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students and Asian/Asian American students. Aggregated under the AAPI umbrella, the unique educational experiences of each of these communities are masked through antiquated data aggregation practices leading to challenges with guided policy development and educational praxis that contribute to the disparities in educational outcomes within these two communities.
Through solidarity work between our Washington (WA) As/AsAm and NH/PI communities and researchers, our team was able to produce two unique and separate reports that highlighted each of these unique communities experiences in WA K-12 schools. We hope these findings help to create empower our two communities voices and generate meaningful change for the wellbeing of our NH/PI and our As/AsAm youth.
