Envisioning Better Cities: A Global Tour of Good Ideas (ORO Editions 2019)
This book takes readers on an educational tour of useful, feasible, and novel ideas for making cities more livable, healthy, desirable, and sustainable (environmentally and socially). The book visits cities of all sizes to share what people are doing – now – to tackle the economic, social and environmental challenges their communities face. The case examples span the globe, traveling to Denmark, Australia, Cuba, China, Canada, Germany, Israel, Brazil, the United States and more. Whether describing the benefits of street art in Melbourne, the creation of pollinator pathways in Seattle, the growth of solar energy in China, or the transformative power of garbage collection-for-food programs in Curitiba, Brazil this book brings together a collection of ideas intended to shift how we think about improving cities.
My co-author is Patricia Chase, founder and partner of I-Sustain. I-Sustain organizes study tours for urban planners, city officials, architects, and community leaders to select international cities in order to witness best practices in creating environmentally sustainable cities. I bring a deep knowledge of how creative and communicative practices contribute to making cities more for people – whether the goal is make public spaces more vibrant or engage citizens in improving their neighborhoods. Together we've created a book aimed at people who care deeply about the future of where they live and want ideas and inspiration for making positive change.
The book is organized to emphasize the fundamental need for cities to be people-centered:
