Hi!
I am Meena, a second-year PhD student in the Human Centered Design & Engineering department at University of Washington, Seattle, advised by Professor David McDonald. I also hold a Master's degree in Informatics from UC Irvine, where I was advised by Dr. Bonnie Nardi and Dr. Matthew Bietz, and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
Research Interests:
AI and ML has had exciting developments in recent years. My research seeks to make these algorithmic frameworks available to people through real-world applications in useful and usable ways. I work on human-centered approaches to AI and ML and designing human-AI interactions in social computing systems.
Currently, I am investigating biases in AI/ML classifiers that can detect abuse and hate speech in online comments. This can enable designers to leverage the benefits while minimizing harms when designing automated content moderation systems.
I consider myself a mixed-methods researcher, using methods that are commensurate with the research question I am posing. I draw from both social and technical methods to enable interactions with technology that are meaningful and add value to our experience. You can read more about my research projects here or check my CV. When I am not doing PhD things, I enjoy reading fiction and cooking Indian food :)
