Problem Solving in Lattice QCD

June 28 – July 16, 2021

School Code of Conduct

It is our intention that all students from all perspectives and all personal and research backgrounds will be well served by this school, and that the diversity that students bring will be viewed as an asset. We welcome individuals of all ages, beliefs, genders, gender identities, gender expressions, national origins, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, socioeconomic backgrounds, family education level, and other visible and nonvisible differences. We will gladly honor your request to address you by an alternate/preferred name or gender pronoun. We will do our best to address all students as they wish and support classmates in doing so as well. All members of this school are expected to contribute to a respectful, welcoming and inclusive environment for every other member of this school. Your suggestions are encouraged and appreciated.

In addition, the school will adopt the code of conduct of the annual lattice conference with slight modifications, given below.

The organizers are committed to making this school productive and enjoyable for everyone. Creating a supportive professional environment where open and frank discussion of ideas can take place, where everyone is treated with courtesy and respect, and in which diversity and inclusion are valued, is the responsibility of all the participants (lecturers and students). We will not tolerate harassment of attendees or others involved in the conference in any form. For the entire duration of the lattice summer school, and in other professional interactions with colleagues, you agree to follow these guidelines:

  • Behave professionally in personal interactions as well as in any other form of communication including social media. Harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary comments or jokes are not appropriate. Harassment includes sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, sexual attention or innuendo, deliberate intimidation, stalking, and photography or recording of an individual without consent. It also includes, but is not limited to, offensive comments related to gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, nationality, or the religion or non-religion of participants.

  • Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down attendees or other individuals associated with the school.

  • All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds.

  • If participants wish to share photos of an attendee on social media, we request that they first obtain the attendee’s permission.

  • Give everyone a chance to speak up. Having active discussion is an important part of this school. Please be aware of others in the group who may want to express their opinions.

  • There are no stupid questions in this summer school. Please be patient with each other and explain ideas/thoughts through scientific reasoning.

  • Since Zoom only allows one person to speak at a time, when you find that your conversation has only involved one person in the Zoom meeting for a while, it is considerate to pause and give other people a chance to get involved.

  • We highly recommend that students turn on their cameras when asking questions in the main Zoom room and when working in groups. In case the connection does not allow video, we recommend students use a Zoom picture when the camera is off.

Should a participant be asked to stop any inappropriate behavior, they are expected to comply immediately. In serious cases, they may be asked to leave the school at the sole discretion of the organizers.

Should a participant witness events of bullying, harassment or aggression, we recommend that they approach the affected person and show support. The witness may also suggest that the inappropriate behavior be reported and offer to facilitate that reporting if requested.

Participants can report any violation of these guidelines to any member of the summer school organizers. Such reports will be treated confidentially.

Thank you for helping to make the INT Lattice Summer School welcoming to all.
