EDUCATION I am originally from Massachusetts, and completed my undergraduate degree at Stonehill College in North Easton, MA, in 2018. At Stonehill, I majored in philosophy with minors in English and Political Science. I entered college without much certainty about what I wanted to study, but am thankful to have attended a school with a philosophy requirement, because after about one week of PHL100, I was hooked. After graduating from Stonehill, I moved to Oxford, OH to complete an M.A. at Miami University. After completing my degree at Miami, I moved even further west to Seattle to begin my Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 2020. At UW, I am also completing a graduate certificate in Science, Technology, & Society Studies. I am happy to provide a list of my graduate-level coursework upon request.
PHILOSOPHY What do we owe to others' emotions? My dissertation project studies the relationship between disability, injustice, and emotion, with a particular eye toward emotional manipulation and weaponization via (so-called) 'therapy-speak'. The central positive argument in my dissertation is for a renewed regard for attentive care (with special attention to its roots in Iris Murdoch's ethical writings) as an ameliorative ethical principle that might guide our dealings with others' emotions. You can learn more about the particular questions that I'm interested in exploring on the "Writing and Scholarship" page, as well as on my CV.
I'm also quite interested in public-facing scholarship. I want to both create work that can be taken up by 'the public,' as well as disrupt potentially too-narrow understandings of who and what 'the public' is. It is through reading widely that I've been able to make most sense of my own experiences, and I hope that at least some of my writing--academic and otherwise--can provide hermeneutical tools for others to do the same.
OTHER I love reading fiction, and have been (successfully!) trying to develop more of a taste for speculative fiction and fantasy. I practice yoga regularly, and taught it when I lived in Ohio. I run slowly but frequently, and also enjoy solitaire, crossword puzzles, and video games. I enjoy baking shows a surprising amount for someone who isn't much of a baker, and scrolling social media an unsurprising amount for someone born in the nineties.
