The World of Values

in the Lvov-Warsaw School

International Symposium

October 21-23, 2021

Olga Honcharenko, Opening Address

The Lvov-Warsaw School is known in the world first of all through the prism of the results in logic and its applications in such domains as ontology or philosophy of sciences. However, the problems of different kinds of values were not ignored by members of the School. On the contrary, axiological issues were analyzed by many members of the LWS and for some of them they became the main object of research.

The main subject of the symposium are moral, aesthetic, praxiological and epistemic values in the philosophy of the Lvov-Warsaw School.

In particular, the following problems will be discussed:

(1) Ethics in the Lvov-Warsaw School (Twardowski’s program of scientific ethics, Czeżowski’s, Ajdukiewicz’s and Tatarkiewicz’s axiological intuitionism; Kotarbiński’s independent ethics, etc.)

(2) Aesthetics in the Lvov-Warsaw School (aesthetic analyses of Witwicki, Tatarkiewicz, Blaustein, Wallis and others)

(3) Praxiology in the Lvov-Warsaw School (praxiological analyses of Kotarbiński and his students, social role of a philosopher, etc.);

(4) Cognitive values in the Lvov-Warsaw School (antiirrationalism, logic as "morality of thought" etc.)

(5) Values in analytic philosophy: comparative studies.
