Novae is an archaeological site situated on the right bank of the Danube in northern Bulgaria, about 4 kilometres to the east of the modern town of Svishtov. The place is famous for the memorial park dedicated to the events of 1877, but also for the Roman legionary fortress and Late Roman town.
The legionary fortress (castra) at Novae is accompanied by a civilian settlement (canabae). At a certain distance from the camp, another settlement (vicus) has grown, which must have been economically and socially connected to Novae. In the Late Roman period the fortress transformed into a military-civilian town, which some time later was surrounded by the new, eastern defensive walls. In such form Novae existed until the beginning of the 7th century AD.
