OUR PROJECTS

CUBICS

CUBICS is the successor initiative to the Canadian CubeSat Project. It is a CSA program which provides post-secondary students the opportunity to conduct an end-to-end space mission. UVSD is partnered with the Centre for Aerospace Research for UVic's project, Skya'anaSat.

Skya'anaSat will be a 3U cubesat which will demonstrate a novel approach to ionospheric measurement through transionospheric sounding by satellite. The project started in June 2023.

SatNOGS

SatNOGS is an open-source collection of ground stations worldwide, accessible via a web interface, allowing for automated data collection from a wide range of satellites, primarily those operating in the amateur radio bands. Started as part of the 2014 NASA SpaceApps Challenge, the project is now maintained by the Libre Space Foundation.

UVSDs contribution to the network is a self-contained listening ground station collocated with the UVic Satellite Ground Station, consisting of student-built UHF and VHF antennas, a custom RF frontend, with narrow band cavity filters, LNA's, and relays to disconnect the station during main ground station operations.

Canadian CubeSat Project

The Canadian CubeSat Project was an initiative brought forward by the Government of Canada to increase the interest and skills of Canadian students in space technology. It provided teams of professors and students the funding and expertise to design and build their own cube satellite.

ORCASAT was a collaboration between UVic and UBC to develop a 2U cubesat as part of this initiative. It launched in November 2022 and operated from December 2022 to July of 2023.
