PESISIR Teaching & Learning Concept
Campus Studio & Practice Studio
Students benefit from both knowledge in practice and university as part of the learning process. Our program defines student learning in two categories: Campus Studio and Practice Studio. While the Campus Studio provides a structured programme in the University to develop theoretical design thinking, the Practice Studio is a hands-on experience through partnership with architectural firms and construction projects in the building industry.
Students Learning Time between M.Arch PESISIR and Mainstream
Students gain theoretical and practical experience both in the academia and in architectural practice. During office hours, students are mentored by professional architects and in the University, students are mentored by both architectural scholars and practitioners to develop theoretical and viable ideas for their design projects.
Involvement of Academics and Professionals during the Campus Studio
Throughout the semester, students are guided through personal tutorials with Workbase Masters and through the involvement of various professionals in the form of internal or external panels and in a series of crit sessions. The various evaluations and feedback from the multiple experts provide a comprehensive teaching and learning dialog within the student's design project.
Online Teaching & Learning
Online Teaching and Learning
UTM and the Programme of Architecture have chosen specific applications and procedures to effectively deliver online teaching and learning, upon convenient of students and faculty members.
Face-to-Face and Online Design studios
The semesters were conducted in a variety of ways, practicing both online and face-to-face teaching and learning. Some semesters were conducted online while others were supposed to be completely face-to-face until the government enacted the Movement Control Order (MCO). However, this did not hinder the students and faculty to establish the design studios through online and virtual participation.
UTM E-Learning
The online learning platform provided by UTM was launched prior to the pandemic and has since been used within the design studios to collate course information, design references, submissions and asynchronous feedback notes.
Google Suites
The Google education account provided by UTM allows students to use Google services such as Google Drive (file storage and sharing) and Google Slides (presentations and collaborative work) for crits and reviews. The tool allows real-time and offline feedback from Workbase masters. In addition, Google Forms is often used as a submission platform, while Google Sheet is used for marking and written feedback.
Miro
The Programme of Architecture has introduced the Miro app to students since start of the pandemic. Miro is an online whiteboarding tool that allows students to collaborate with their peers, record their design process, receive real-time feedback from workbase masters or examiners and be used for project presentations. Our programme also adopted Miro for student organised portfolio exhibitions.
