Chemical Management Unit (CMU) or formerly known as Chemical Management Centre (CMC) was established in January 2012 under the management of University Laboratory Management Centre (PPMU), UTM Johor Bahru. The unit coordinates chemical management in the campus to ensure optimization of chemical usage for all relevant departments in UTM. Other than that, CMC was also established to manage chemical procurement, inventories, segregation, scheduled waste disposal and safety. In January 2019, CMC was rebranded to CMU yet still running the same functions.
CMUKL, on the other hand, was established in the same year but only caters some of its main functions in chemical management, safety, as well as, scheduled wastes disposal, where previously, these functions were carried out by PPMU. To hold the UTM enVision 2025, CMUKL is currently undergoing management restructuring to centralize all chemical related safety into one roof.
CMUKL Functions:
Chemical management for the purpose of Teaching and Learning (T&L) and Research;
Coordinates chemical related policies and guidelines;
Manages procurement of chemicals for T&L;
Monitors procurement of chemicals for Research;
Manages scheduled waste disposal activities in UTMKL;
Manages trainings and courses related to chemicals and scheduled wastes disposal;
To be a reference centre for chemicals and scheduled wastes disposal; and
Provides a platform for Chemical Health Risk Assessor, Hygiene Technicians and Scheduled Waste Management competencies.
