Readings & Homework

An active learning environment is only successful if you come to class prepared to engage. Thus, it is essential that you complete weekly readings and reflect on them critically before class. Each week, there are 2-3 required readings, and I will recommend 1-3 additional readings that will help you explore ideas more deeply. Two or three readings is less than what is typically expected in graduate-level courses, but I prefer to emphasize thinking deeply about ideas (versus exposing you to a breadth of ideas). At times, I will assign specific homework tasks to help you reflect critically on certain ideas prior to class. These may include reflecting on an aspect of readings, completing a mathematics task, or watching videos or analyzing children’s work. All homework tasks are due on the Saturday 11:59pm before class.

Most readings will come from the required course texts. Supplemental readings can be found in the Google Class Folder.

Homework Based on Readings

Saturday (11:59pm) is the absolute latest deadline that still gives me time to review your homework responses before we meet. I do read through all response before class, and I often plan class activities or make last minute adjustments to plans for class in order to provide feedback on your responses. If you know that you will be busy on the weekend, you should plan ahead to complete the homework well in advance of the deadline. Feedback on homework will be offered to the whole class (rather than to individuals). In other words, I expect your understanding of ideas will change and evolve across readings and class sessions.

NOTE: Even in weeks when there is no homework task, you are expected to complete and engage critically with all readings before class. Failure to complete readings will detract from your learning during class sessions and will make it difficult to meet expectations on summative assignments. You should expect to revisit your homework responses and readings throughout the course to support your learning and your completion of assignments.

Homework tasks will be submitted through the Google Forms links on the course calendar below.
