Heidelberger Laboratory

The Heidelberger laboratory

studies mechanisms of neurotransmitter release and

synaptic communication in health and disease

In broad strokes, the Heidelberger laboratory identifies mechanisms that modulate neuronal synaptic communication and have potential as new therapeutic targets for the amelioration of synaptopathic disorders of the central nervous system.

In particular, the Heidelberger laboratory investigates presynaptic mechanisms regulating neurotransmitter release in two classes of neurons essential for vision - retinal photoreceptors and retinal bipolar cells.

Results will enhance our understanding of early visual system signal processing and build the knowledge base required for the development of new treatments to restore retinal function following photoreceptor loss.
