We appreciate fathers in our society. So much so that almost every field has an outstanding recognized father. If you were to google, “father of,” extensive lists will appear that produce results ranging from the father of modern cosmetology to the father of modern chemistry. But where are the mothers? When completing a google search, “the mother of lists” or any variations of those words, results range from an Arabic film, a dress boutique, and a website filled with essays of various topics. This tells me we value the male figure in the idea of creation or discovery. We value the male figure in inventions and progress. We credit the male- most often the white (or most white/closest to white), (or most) heterosexual, cisgendered, able-bodied, affluent male. How do we “crown” the father? At what expense and to whom do we get “the father of?”
