Patient and
Caregiver Education
When we began developing our project, we had 2 main goals that we wanted to achieve, First, we wanted to create something that could help nurses with distributing basic wound care information. This information would have to cover information about active wound management as well as wound prevention. We also wanted to emphasize that our resource should be accessible and understandable to the hospital’s patients and their families. The information we wanted to present had to be understood by anyone, no matter how much previous knowledge they had.
From January to October 2023, we researched and developed 6 patient education handouts for patients and their families. The handouts dealt with topics in wound management and prevention, and they were centered around 6 of the most common wounds nurses may face at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). After researching and consulting with our Moi University nursing partner, Amon Kebeni, we boiled everything down to 6 wound care handouts that cover:
Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
Minor burns
Incision site / sutures
Skin abscess
Change a dressing
Cellulitis
These handouts are just the initial common wounds we sought to make at the time but after shadowing and spending time with the nurses and doctors in Eldoret, we’ve also seen the need to add more (ex. Diabetes and Nutrition)
