Hima’s PhD dissertation focuses on how floods shape the floodplains of the Trinity River in Texas. More specifically, she is interested in understanding how sediment such as sand and silt are deposited on floodplains and what the shape and style of the deposits can tell us about environmental conditions during floods. Hima was raised in both Germany and the US and most recently moved from Los Angeles to Austin to pursue her PhD. STEM has always been a big part of her life since she grew up with chemists as parents. Her interested in geology developed during college when she became interested in understanding what the impact of climate change has and will have on society. Her curiosity to understand how different environmental factors shape landscapes and societies continue to inspire her research focus. In Spring 2018, Hima visited a 5th grade classroom every week. She hopes to learn how to engage students and develop lesson plans focused on impacts of extreme events such as floods. When she is not working on her dissertation, Hima enjoys climbing, traveling, and learning to play the guitar.
