The Siege of Vicksburg took place in May 1863. Union forces would fight to gain control of the Confederate stronghold Vicksburg, Mississippi, which would give them control of the Mississippi River. After weeks of fighting, the Confederacy was defeated and Vicksburg was captured. The Union gained control of the Mississippi River and split the South (Confederacy) in half preventing their shipment of troops and supplies along the river.
This battle is considered a turning point of the war.
