The Battle of Gettysburg took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863. This battle lasted for three days as General Robert E. Lee attempted to invade northern territory. Lee was repelled (forced back) by Union forces and forced to retreat after losing 1/3 of his army in battle. Following this Union victory, Confederate forces would never again be capable of an offensive attack into Union territory. It is estimated there were as many as 50,000 casualties (killed or wounded) making it the deadliest battle of the Civil War.
This battle is considered a turning point of the war.
