How to improve

Here are some general ideas on how you can improve your English skills:

  • Watch films or YouTube clips in English. Try not to use the Swedish subtitles or even better; use the English subtitles instead.
  • Try summarizing the plot of the film or clip in writing, or re-tell it to your friends or family at dinner.
  • Listen to podcasts or radio shows. Just Google "podcast" + your field of interest.
  • There are many good ways to practice reading. One of the best is to read a book. We have a great English section in our school library. Try to pick a book that is neither too easy, nor too difficult. ReadTheory can help you find your level.
  • When you read, try to use strategies for understanding rather than translating every word.
  • Some people like read along when they listen to texts. ESL-bits is a good place to find audiobooks where you can also read along.
  • When it comes to writing structure is very important. Make sure you know to whom you are writing, and what you want to say. Try using the Five Paragraph Essay structure.
