The School Teachers Enrichment Program (STEP) was established in 1986. Since 1999, administration of the program is in the hands of the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation. STEP is financed by the Berlin Senate Department for Education, and has been continually refined and expanded. One of the organization's main function is the German Teacher Exchange Program (GTEP) program: German school teachers from all German federal states are sent to a US partner state to teach for 1-3 years. Utah has been fortunate to partner with STEP for several years now and a number of our German immersion teachers have come through this program. A delegation from STEP visited West Elementary, Summit Academy High School, and Summit Academy Independence on October 28, 2024 to talk with their current program teachers and to learn more about our German immersion programs.
LTI, the testing company of AAPPL, is holding office hours to explain the AAPPL test and share tips. Teachers can just go to the link below, check the dates on the calendar, and then register to the Zoom meeting on the date of your choice. As always, we recommend that you test as early as possible to make sure that you have enough time to deal with any irregularities. This year's AAPPL testing window is from October 14 - November 29, 2024. Have you checked out
And we are officially registered for the Deutscher Vorlesetag on November 15, 2024. You can search for our registration on the official website by typing in "Utah". Summit Academy Independence and West Elementary will participate. We are now in search of fluent German speakers that will read to our immersion children. Please share this registration link and the flyer below with anyone available and interested. More to come! Stay tuned!
Do you remember the 6 core instructional strategies from your AUDII training? Can you name them from the top of your head? We will highlight one core strategy each month until the end of this school year to refresh our memory. This month, we are starting with the first core strategy: Content and Language Objectives!
Note how the DLI Core Instuctional Strategies Observation Protocol checks on each of the four stepts for interaction with content and language goals. Are both objectives posted? Are they actively introduced to students? Are they interacted with during the lesson? And, finally, are the revisited at the end of the lesson? This makes learning transparent for students and helps the teacher to be intentional with their planned language supports.
We have known that learning another language is beneficial for brain developement. There is a new study that shows just how the brain benefits from early language learning,. The research is summarized in the article "Bilingualism makes the brain more efficient, especially when learned at a young age". Click here to read the full article.
Some students seem to forget everything that we teach them. What can we do about it? This article explains of why students forget and what we can do about it. Click here to read the full article.
Synthesizing is an essential critical-thinking skill. On the AP German Language and Culture exam, students have to write a synthesis essay by accurately summarizing facts, opinions, and inferences from three different sources and coming to their own opinion and conclusion. Together with the email response, the essay counts for 25% of the final score on the AP exam. We can practice synthesizing with students as early as elementary school. Here is a great video and article how to make synthesizing visible for students.
"Hook them!" How do we engage students right at the beginning of the lesson when , research tells us, their attention span is the highest? This article gives some great ideas how to engage students the moment they come to class. Click here to read the full article.
