GET COUNTED, MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Over the years the state of Utah has lacked a cohesive program for collecting user count data on the active transportation facilities we’ve built. While there are some communities and agencies that have branched out on their own and set-up a system, those examples are the exception, not the rule. Without this data we have had a hard time answering important questions like; do we see more use on multi-use trails or on-street bike lanes, or does the ridership decrease in the winter?
Transportation agencies across the Wasatch Front including UDOT, WFRC, MAG and UTA are working together to set-up a program to count users on the walking, biking or scooting transportation network. Counting methods may include permanent counters, temporary counters, or face-to-face methods. The goal of the program is to establish a plan for where, when, and how to count active transportation users, and create a pilot for a public facing database for easy data extraction. Upon completion of this work we would like to try and roll the program out statewide.
This website will be used to document the study steps that we will be going through to develop a program.
