The process for our surrealism photobook on Sampaloc was a blend of careful planning, engagement with the community, and exploring creative ideas. To begin, We conducted a content analysis of existing photographs and media representations of urban Manila, such as Sampaloc's streets and historical areas. By thoroughly understanding the district, we formed our surrealist approach through symbolism and changing the way reality is presented. Scenes, like student gatherings, street vendors, and everyday commuting, were reinterpreted with creative elements to produce narratives highlighting historical context and current issues.
The researchers visited places within Sampaloc, such as España, Padre Campa, Dapitan, Legarda, and Lacson, for their diverse representations of the district’s life and history. They also interviewed residents and street vendors whose stories and experiences helped shape the surreal images. Their involvement improved the authenticity of representing the community’s social and economic issues.
The technical process required thoughtful planning, from the choice of camera equipment to post-production. After shooting, hours were spent editing the images. Each photo followed design principles like symmetry, balance, and framing, with color grading helping to set the right mood. Lighting, color, and composition were carefully chosen to evoke certain emotions, reveal hidden aspects, and offer new perspectives of Sampaloc.
