In one of the most popular ones, there was once a man who suffered from a terrible disease that no doctor could cure. In his despair, the man prayed to the Virgin Mary for release from his pain. To his astonishment, the next morning the man found that his disease had vanished. He was healed. This man, whose name we don’t know, took a lamp and some oil with him to an orchard near his home. He would lift the lamp up to the sky and pour some of the oil into it as an offering to the Virgin Mary. One day, the Virgin appeared to him in the form of a young woman. She asked the man to build a chapel in that field where he was offering his oil. The man was stunned at first, but he did as she asked. He used some of his money to buy the land and get construction started.

The Apparition and its Aftermath

The Virgin made her appearance in a magnificent light, surrounded by many seraphims and was astonishingly beautiful. She possessed a girdle covered in jewels that were more brilliant than the stars, an imperial crown, and other accessories. A blue cloak covered her shoulders. She was carrying the Baby Jesus over her left arm. She prevented a guilty soul from returning to Hell by lifting it out with her right hand and holding it. A kneeling angel on the opposite side presented the Divine Child, who was in His mother's arms, with a basket full of hearts while he was seated. He took each heart individually and ignited it with his love. Mary declared that she wanted to be known as Maria Madre Santissima del Lume (Mary Most Holy Mother of Light), and repeated three times, stating to not forget that.

History of the Diocesan Shrine and Parish

The people of Cainta were convinced after their visit to the man that he was telling the truth. They agreed to build a church on the land, and the Virgin Mary appeared to them as well. The people of Cainta built the church, and it became a pilgrimage site for people who lived in the surrounding areas. Many people visited the church, and they left gifts in thanks for favors they had received from the Virgin Mary. The church grew in popularity and fame. People began to visit it in droves. The people of Cainta needed to do something to house the many people who wanted to visit. They wanted them to have a place where they could stay and rest. They wanted them to have a place where they could be fed. So, the people of Cainta built a bigger church. The original church was destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt. The church has undergone renovations and changes over the decades. It has grown in size and stature in the Philippines as one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the country.
