Application and Process

Beginning of the year (Senior Year)

Check in with your current language teacher / ELL teacher that you are seeking the Seal of Biliteracy.

Make sure you are registered for a qualifying language exam.

Verify that you have a qualifying English assessment.

Step 1

Request an unofficial transcript from the school registrar AND fill out the application form

Application and completed form due by March 22nd.

Step 2

Inform your teacher that you have applied for the State Seal of Bilteracy and give them your transcripts (or get their help to find them).

Your teacher will send your application and transcripts to the District SOBL representative to process your information.  If needed, an AAPPL or other test record will be established for you and shared with your world language teacher.

Step 3

Schedule a day and time with your teacher to take the proficiency assessment. Take the test!

Step 4

Review the results with your world language teacher.

If your proficiency test results qualify you for the Silver or Gold Kansas Seal of Biliteracy, you will be given cords to wear on graduation day.  If your results are in by mid-April,  your certificate of biliteracy may be presented to you at the senior awards assembly. If this is not possible, your World Language teacher will present your certificate to you prior to graduation.

If your results did not qualify you for the Seal of Biliteracy, you have the opportunity to retest before the SECOND Friday in May.
