Algebra 2 Syllabus
2017-2018 School Year
Ms. O'Neil
Room 400
Introduction:
Welcome to our math class! So that you can do your best, I have compiled a brief summary of my expectations and classroom procedures. I am available to help you after school in room 400. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My phone number here at FSHS is 832-6050 ext. 4399 and my email is Loneil@usd497.org.
Course Description:
The topics covered in this course will include mathematical operations and graphing and solving systems of equations, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, polynomial equations, rational equations, and graphing and writing equations of conics.
Prerequisites:
Credit for Algebra 1 and Geometry or Advanced Geometry.
Textbooks:
Algebra 2 by McDougal Littell
Grading Scale:
90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
59% and below = F
Course Grade:
Your course grade will be determined as follows: Assignments (homework, in-class assignments, and activites) will make up 25% of your quarter grade and Assessments (tests and quizzes) will be worth 75%. There will also be a cumulative final exam that will be worth 15% of your total semester grade.
Assignments:
Homework will be assigned every night and collected during the next class period. You must put your name, hour, and the assignment at the top of your paper. You must also show all of your work to receive full credit. I will grade homework on a four point scale, a four being a complete and correct assignment. You should always come to class with your assignment completed and your answers checked. Late homework IS accepted for credit until the chapter/unit test is taken and is not accepted at all after that date. Students are responsible for obtaining assignments in the case of an excused absence. Daily assignments are posted on the calendar on my website.
Assessments:
There will be a test at the end of every chapter/unit and quizzes given as needed. I expect you to be prepared for the test the day it is given. If you have an excused absence on the test day, you have one week from your return to school to make up your test or quiz, otherwise it will count as a zero. If you have an unexcused absence on a test day, your test will count as a zero. All make-up assessments must be done before or after school and must be scheduled with me ahead of time. All assessments must be completed in one sitting; you may not start a test one day and finish it another.
Assessment Retakes:
1. Retakes are available to everyone in the class.
2. The retake will be a new version of the assessment.
3. One retake is allowed per assessment.
4. ALL assignments for the unit/chapter must be completed before a retake.
5. The Retake Ticket must be completed before a retake.
6. The retake must be completed by the date I give you (usually 2 weeks.)
7. The retake grade will replace the original assessment grade - even if it is a lower grade.
*If you continually fail assessments, you will be referred to the administration and your parents will be notified. Other strategies may be implemented to help you succeed.
Required Materials:
You need to bring your textbook, notebook, paper, pencils or pens, and a calculator to class every day. You are required to have at least a scientific calculator, but I strongly recommend buying a graphing calculator (TI-84+) as you will use it during class, on your assignments, and on most assessments. If that is a problem for you, I have some that can be checked out for the semester.
Notebooks:
It is strongly recommended that you keep and organize a notebook containing a section for class notes and handouts and a section for homework. Keeping your notebook organized will allow you to better prepare for assessments and the cumulative final exam. Also, in the case of a grading error, your homework score can be verified.
Academic Dishonesty:
See pg. 48 of the Student Handbook on the Free State Website.
Expectations:
RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and EXCELLENCE!!! I expect that you try your best and do not create problems for yourself or others. If necessary, consequences will be assigned on a case-by-case basis. I also expect that you follow the school rules as listed in your panner.
Final Thoughts:
I am here to facilitate your learning. Please ask questions whenever you don’t understand something. The only dumb questions are the ones that are not asked. Remember, I am here after school to help you have a successful school year, but please be respectful and schedule and appointment with me ahead of time. I also know that things happen; it never hurts to approach your teacher with your concerns. If you are willing to put forth an effort, I am willing to listen.
*As your instructor, I reserve the right to modify this syllabus. Any changes will be announced in class and posted on this website.
