Each priority standard will be scored using a 4-point scale. The goal is for students to reach Level 3- Mastery by the end of the school year. The descriptors of each level is outlined below.
We believe it is important to provide families with a comprehensive report on their child's progress in school. That is why we report social skills, turning in and completing assignments, effort, and behavior separately on the grade card for elementary students. These aspects are crucial for success both in school and in life. However, we want to ensure that they do not affect a student's academic grade, which should reflect their understanding of the grade level standards.
Extra credit or bonus points for non-academic purposes will not be used. For example, bringing classroom supplies, while appreciated, will not be part of a student's academic grade. If students are not making progress towards mastering skills and concepts, teachers may provide additional assignments and activities that will help the student improve their overall understanding of that standard and mastery of that skill.
Level 4- Exemplary- Student demonstrates an advanced understanding of concepts, skills and processes taught in the reporting period. Exceeds the required performance.
Please note: A Level 4 Mastery is only available for standards marked with an asterisk* on the standards-referenced grade card. See the FAQs to learn more about how you can support your child in performing at a Level 4.
Level 3- Mastery- Student consistently demonstrates an understanding of concepts, skills and processes taught in the reporting period.
Level 2- Progressing- Student is not yet consistent in demonstrating an understanding of concepts, skills, and processes taught in the reporting period.
Level 1- Needs Improvement- Student does not demonstrate an understanding of concepts, skills and processes taught in the reporting period. Student is performing below grade level expectations.
N/A- Not Assessed- Not assessed in the reporting period.
Our Standards Referenced Grade Card is based upon the Kansas Standards for English Language Arts (2023) and the Kansas Mathematical Standards (2017). All grade level standards are taught throughout the course of the school year, however a select number of standards, as identified as our classroom teachers, are assessed for mastery during the school year. These are the standards reflected on the Standards Referenced Grade Card.
When using Standards-Referenced Grading, the progress report will provide separate feedback on social abilities, submission and completion of assignments, hard work, and conduct. These factors are crucial for achievement in both education and personal life. It is important to note that successful learning behaviors should not artificially raise or lower a student's academic grade, as this grade should solely reflect their comprehension of the grade level standards.
Individual standards will not be used to report scores for science and social studies. Instead, an overall grade will be given. Our goal is to include specific mastery standards for these subjects as we continue to enhance our Standards Referenced Grade Card.
Students will receive scores for the following elementary speciality courses: Art, Music, and Physical Education. Scores for these courses will be reported in two areas: understanding and application of concepts and self management skills.
