WELCOME to WRN Track, where you will be part of a strong tradition of Washburn Rural athleticism, sportsmanship and pride. Our goal is to help and encourage you to try something new, enhance your athletic performance, and be a part of something bigger than yourself.
Our program is designed to allow coaches to work with athletes at their appropriate skill level, thus providing an opportunity for athletes to be successful. The track program will consist of two interscholastic teams (JV and Varsity) for each grade level.
Qualities of great athletes begin with: coachability, attitude, teamwork, hustle, effort and willingness to push themselves when things get hard.
FAQ's

February 18th- Advisory Meeting with track specific information will be discussed. If you miss the meeting- please come see Coach Roney or Coach Cook for information.
Are there any papers I need to fill out? YES! Athletes must have a physical on file with the office before the first day they can practice. Physical packets can be obtained in the front office. The documents needed are found HERE on the WRN website under "Participation". Physicals for track are due by February 27, 2026.
What do I need to do to participate? Athletes must be passing 5 classes, attend practices, wear proper athletic wear (shorts/sweats and t-shirt), tennis shoes, and finally-bring a water bottle and a GOOD ATTITUDE!
I don't think I am fast enough... You never know what you are capable of until you TRY. Over the years, numerous athletes have surprised themselves with how well they performed and what they were able to accomplish. Track is a great way to get your foot in the door into being a better version of yourself, trying new things, making friends and challenging yourself in ways you hadn't thought possible.
Will I be on JV or Varsity? Athletes will be placed onto JV or Varsity teams generally based on event scores. Most athletes are interested in more than one event (in track you can run up to FOUR in a meet). Sometimes multi-event athletes are leading scorers in one event, but not another. Coaches look at the performance of the ENTIRE athlete (practice and in meets) and make decisions based on what will provide the most success and opportunity for an athlete. Due to numbers, athletes are guaranteed a minimum of 3 meets. Most of our meets can only have 3 entries in an event. This means a lot of planning on the part of coaches to make sure all athletes get opportunities to perform in chosen events.
How do I watch and where do I go to watch my kid compete at track events? At track meets WRN track athletes will sit together as a TEAM in a designated area of the hosting school. Spectators will have their own area to sit and watch. Just as in team practice- parents are to be off the track and out of the way of practicing performance and competition. With large numbers of athletes moving about, and running back and forth between events, it is essential for the safety of all that athletes and coaches are able to focus without distraction. Spectators may not be on the track at any time as this may result in disqualification of runners, field event competitors, or even entire teams. Your safety and that of your child comes first. If your child competes in a field event, it is permissable to be along the sidelines of those areas provided by the hosting schools. Please be vigilant and aware of your surroundings as there are times when implements, such as a shot put or discus, could be thrown inadvertently in a direction that could severely injure someone. Only when athletes are competing will they be allowed on the track.
