more about sel...

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) encompasses key skills that our students need to be successful in the classroom, in relationship to others around them and in life.  These skills are being modeled and taught throughout the school day, throughout the building.  Learning to ask for help when you need it, to stand up for yourself,  to handle peer pressure, to believe in yourself even when you make a mistake, to be compassionate to others and take responsibility for yourself are all skills that students need in a learning environment as well as outside of school.

As a school social worker, I facilitate SEL skill building opportunities, consult with teachers working to integrate SEL into their classrooms and help implement our SEL curriculum, 7 Mindsets.  For more information about 7 Mindsets, go to the 7 Mindsets Tab at the top of the page.

What is a School Social Worker?

School social workers have a lot of different roles within an elementary school!  Promoting social & emotional well-being and growth through classroom lessons (SEL) & school wide initiatives is just the beginning.  As a trained social worker, I have the skills and experience to be able to work closely with families and teachers to support students facing challenges that interfere with their learning.  Challenges can range from family change, loss/grief or mental health concerns to conflict with peers, difficulty adapting to change or difficulty managing emotions.  Whether the concern is big or small, my goal is to empower students by giving them the tools and skills they need to handle whatever it is that they are facing.   I also have the privilege of coordinating programs such as Blessings in a Backpack, TeamMates Mentoring of Louisburg and Wildcat CREW clubs which each provide important opportunities for our students and families.
