The time of year is coming again when all sorts of ghouls and monsters come out to shine. From vampires to werewolves to ghosts, and most importantly: teenage girls trying to balance out school work, relationships, and their life as a witch.
“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” started as a minor character in Archie Comics, with her first comic published in 1962, written by George Gladir and illustrated by Dan DeCarlo.
Sabrina has had her TV shows since then, including both animated and live-action. Sabrina was able to resonate with audiences with her relatability with her young adult struggles, such as crushing on boys, as well as the fun fantasy element of being a witch.
Millennials and older Gen Z might recognize “Sabrina” from her 1996 sitcom TV series titled, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” Like TV characters from the 90s, Sabrina is known for her stylish outfits along with many other characters that appear throughout the show.
Sabrina’s style is able to balance out her supernatural side with her average, everyday girl appearance. Sabrina’s outfits included a lot of 90s popular trends like tight turtlenecks, knee-high boots, mesh tops, mini skirts, and tights. Meanwhile, Sabrina would often wear a lot of dark whimsical colors as well, such as purple, red, black, and many others symbolizing her magical side.
Besides the comedy show that featured real-life actors, there was another adaptation of Sabrina from 1999, “Sabrina: The Animated Series.” Unlike the sitcom counterpart which had multiple seasons, the cartoon only had one season.
Not only did the art style scream the late 90s to early 2000s animation media, but so did the character designs of that show. Many characters are seen wearing baggy pants, chunky shoes, mini dresses, or skirts.
Like in her previous show, Sabrina is still the teen fashion icon of her time. However, due to being animated, Sabrina would often be drawn wearing one main outfit rather than changing from episode to episode. While this might seem to be a downgrade, it is a positive because, in the animation industry, a cartoon character having a constant look helps the character be more memorable for the audience and easier to animate.
The most recent Sabrina series is the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” which streamed on Netflix in 2018. The “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” stands among previous stories surrounding Sabrina because of the show having a much darker tone and aiming for a mature audience. This was why Netflix Sabrina’s style is something more old school and preppy, as opposed to her more modern looks from her past shows.
The thriller was able to last more than one season, having four seasons in total. However, the 90s sitcom is still the longest-running Sabrina show compared to the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and “Sabrina: The Animated Series,” with it having seven seasons and still being remembered fondly for its whimsical charm.
Whether Sabrina is drawn or played by a real-life actor, Sabrina will always be the teenage witch icon for many teens and younger adults.

Halloween is right around the corner, and we all know Hiawatha is the local king of Halloween. We have a huge parade every year, a haunted house and get Halloween off from school. Additionally, everyone knows that the most important parts of Halloween are costumes and candy. So, naturally you’d want to look extra glamorous while also getting a lot of candy.
There are many different ways to get your hands on an excellent costume. While you could easily just go to Spirit Halloween or order your own costume off of the internet like this toilet man costume below, you could also make your own costume. With enough creativity, and a little bit of time and effort, you could make your own costume for far cheaper than a store bought or online costume. For example, the toilet man costume sells for about 45 dollars at Target. However, you could make your costume out of cheap household materials for even less. Some good ones are cardboard, or even moldable plastic. If you’re going for the toilet vibe, don’t be afraid to add in some toilet paper -- preferably the used kind for added authenticity.
While Halloween costumes are a big part of Halloween, the best part of Halloween, and everyone's favorite part, is the candy. While a large part of the candy distributed amongst our youth comes from the local parade, the majority is of course passed around by other Hiawatha residents.
However, it is always important to check yours and your child’s candy before eating it. This is because some sick people try to hide dangerous objects and substances in candy they pass out around this time of year. For example, the apple in the photo below. Look closely, or you might miss it. If you still haven’t noticed it, there is a large razor embedded inside of the apple. It’s almost invisible to the naked eye. This is a terrifying example of how someone could hide a dangerous object inside your candy. Someone could easily not notice the razor in the apple and hurt themselves trying to eat it. Please don’t pass out apples on Halloween anyway because that’s lame.
While having fun this Halloween should be your top priority, it is also important to make sure you stay safe and make good choices. Always remember to check your candy, and especially your apples before consumption. Happy Halloween!

The changes outside in the leaves, the attitude, and the atmosphere indicates that the best season of all is on its way. Fall started Sept. 1 and lasts until Oct. 30, but this year it seems a little delayed.
The season of fall was not named fall for as long as it has been around. In the time prior to the 14th century fall was not even a season. During this time everyone just referred to it as “harvest,” This was because it was common for most cultures to identify that winter and summer were the only seasons. Around the 17th century, the season of fall got its name from the concept of leaves falling out of the trees and covering the ground.
Fall means different things to every individual on earth. For animals it is time to prepare for winter, but for humans it is time for fun and the celebrations of another year. For centuries, different cultures around the world have used the fall season to develop traditions. Just like everything else in this world everyone has their own experiences that control their opinion on subjects. In my opinion fall is the best season because I enjoy being at home in warm blankets, drinking pumpkin spice coffee, carving pumpkins and watching movies.
During fall in the small town of Hiawatha there are plenty of traditions. Every year the Maple Leaf Festival takes place. This event was on Sept. 28. During this festival people walked around to see all of the vibrant trees while supporting small businesses and creators. Another big event that takes place right here in town is the Halloween Frolic. Hiawatha is often called “Halloweentown” because Halloween is a super important event here. The Halloween Frolic has been held in this town since 1914. This event was created by Mrs. Krebs. In 1914, Krebs held the first Halloween party for the kids in this town. The children would dress in costumes, decorate their bikes and wagons and walk around and vote on other children's creations. During this competition, Krebs would reward the winners or the people with the most votes with candy and sweet treats.
Because of Krebs’ influence, the day of Halloween involves two parades, numerous contest winners, cash prizes, trophies, and the Halloween Queen contest. The first parade of the night is composed of hundreds of young children. Awards are given out at the first parade for best costumes, decorated bikes, trikes, wagons, family floats, small motorized vehicles and horses. The second parade of the night is the bigger, more well known Halloween parade. The second parade is composed of high school bands, floats, horses, shrine units and even the governor of Kansas sometimes. Due to the parades being extremely popular, Hiawatha is the only school from this area and surrounding area that has no school on Halloween.
Another important fall destination in this town that has been around for quite some time. This popular place just right outside of town is the Mulberry Pumpkin Patch. Mulberry Pond is a fun place to go for a chill day. The pumpkin patch has laser tag, a petting zoo, pedal boats, a corn maze and more.
Fall in this town is celebrated remarkably well. Fall gives a chance for community members and surrounding areas the opportunity to celebrate the changing of seasons and the history of our community.

Nikocado Avocado, also known as Nicholas Perry, is a YouTuber who makes mukbang and relatable content, and is widely known for how wide he is. After being offline for a while, he has recently gained traction for something that many teenagers are shocked about.
On Sept. 6, Perry uploaded a video which was his first in about seven months titled “2 Steps Ahead.” In the video he revealed that he had lost 250 pounds and posted pre-recorded videos while he was still morbidly obese for the past two years. He called his whole eight-year youtube career “just a bad dream.”
Many of Perry’s fans were surprised and disturbed by his transformation.
“I think he's really scary and there's definitely something wrong with him, he’s probably one of the most terrifying people in the world and it is crazy how he tricked all of us,” senior Bella Hedrick said.
Perry’s videos for the past two years have consisted of his normal content. The “mukbang” style videos, which are the most popular, have been in trend for a couple years now and Perry was one of the early influencers who blew up from the trend. In these videos he eats various amounts of food while connecting with his large audience.
He has always been very involved in drama and has had conflict with various other YouTubers or even his own husband, Orlin. When he isn’t causing drama on the internet, to stay relevant, he posts 10,000 calorie challenges where he eats various foods, adding up to over 10,000 calories in one sitting.
Given this past, seeing the wild transformation is absolutely shocking for a lot of people. Many fans are also worried about his mental health as well.
“I feel like there's so much more than what has been seen and that we don't know,” said senior Kerragan Bachman. “It's very unsettling because he claims to be two steps ahead… does that mean this has always been the plan? He’s been angry and depressed through most of his career… how is it possible to go through that and be mentally stable? It makes me wonder if he’s manic or mentally okay.”
With Nikocado Avocado going through this crazy transformation, it leaves us all curious to see where it'll end. We can only wait to see if he completely changes his life to an all-healthy lifestyle, or goes back into the extreme mukbang cycle for more money and fame.

“Code Lyoko” is a show that aired Sept. 3, 2003 on France's France 3, a French television station. “Code Lyoko” then aired in the United States on April 19, 2004 on Cartoon Network. “Code Lyoko” was 97 episodes long and ended in 2007.
This show is about four kids who find a supercomputer that is called Lyoko. There is another kid who is stuck in the computer. The machine is in an abandoned factory underground which the kids found one day exploring. The underground factory has four tubes that the kids can go into and it leads the kids to the world of Lyoko. The show follows the kids as they eventually join this world and fight bad viruses to keep them from coming to the real world. The kids also work to free the trapped kid, Aelita. The kids go back and forth from Lyoko to the real world. Anytime they come back from Lyoko it is called “Devirtualization.”
This series shows human connections, has drama, and it also has some teen romance. In each episode there is a problem that the kids have to overcome. Most of the episodes have a theme but most of the time it’s just about the kids’ growth.
The main characters' names are Ulrich Stern, Yumi Ishiyama, Odd Della Robbia, and Jeremie Belpois. Aelita Schaeffer, as mentioned above, is the girl stuck in Lyoko.
As the show progresses and gets closer to its 97th episode, the enemies the kids face in Lyoko start to get more and more tough. Though the story itself remained strong until the end, it left off as a sort of cliffhanger. Though Aelita eventually gets freed, a lot of things are left undecided.
A few years after the original show’s cancellation, they made a live action “Code Lyoko.” From what the internet said it didn't do as well because live action is always very hard to please. I haven’t watched the live action yet and don’t plan to.
This show is very nostalgic for me as I watched it a lot when I was younger. I found it on Netflix and started watching it. For years, this show would come back to me and I could never remember what it was called. Finally, a few years ago, I found it and rewatched all of it. This time around, I found it a pretty hard watch. It’s a very silly and cringey show but I would still recommend it if you can get past the weird 3D effects.

The 2001 production “The Princess Diaries” directed by Garry Marshall is a classic for people of all ages. “The Princess Diaries” follows Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, as she is thrown into the life of being a princess after being seemingly invisible her entire life. Hathaway’s character is the next in line to the throne of the Kingdom of Genovia after the death of her father. She has to learn how to navigate life as a princess.
This movie is one of my favorites. Maybe it is just the nostalgia of watching it as a child, but for some reason I enjoy this movie. It is pretty unrealistic, but it is supposed to be a romcom, which are oftentimes not realistic. This movie is a classic for many people in the teenage age range.
“It is a really sentimental movie because I used to watch it with my sister and my dad. I love Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Mia. I think she is probably the most perfect choice for the role considering how humble Anne Hathaway is in real life,” Hiawatha High School student Bella Hedrick said. “I think overall the cast of this movie is very well executed. I like that they picked Queen Julie Andrews and she is so iconic in the movie.”
Like many of her fellow peers, The Princess Diaries was an iconic movie in Bella’s life. This movie brings back a lot of memories and nostalgia for many people. This movie is sentimental to me because I remember watching it a lot as a child. It was a movie that brought comfort to me in hard times. Even today, I still watch this movie when I get a chance.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to watch a lighthearted kid-friendly movie. This movie is so comforting and a very fun watch! This movie is a four out of five stars for me.

Jana Caparros is a senior this year at Hiawatha High School and, much like her father and sister, she loves it here. Just like her sister Julia, Jana is making the most of her senior year in Hiawatha and she is loved by everyone.
“I think that Jana is probably one of the funniest people I’ve met, and she’s just a really great person,” said sophomore Emon Thompson. “She’s so cool without trying, I love getting to learn about her home, Barcelona, and all the differences between Spain and Hiawatha,” said senior Bella Hedrick.
It’s clear Jana fits in great here in Kansas. She is incredibly sweet and easy to talk to,
so I asked her a few quick questions to help people get to know her better.
1. What food do you miss the most from Spain?
“My grandma’s omelet. She is a very good cook, and it reminds me of home.”
2. What’s your favorite drink from America?
“Cherry Dr. Pepper.”
3. What kind of music do you like?
“Country Music.
4. What are your plans after you graduate high school?
“I plan on going to college back home in Spain to become a teacher for little kids!”
5. In Spain, how do you usually spend your weekends?
“Well we don’t drive in Spain like you do in America. So instead we do a lot of walking. Usually we like to go into town for coffee, or just go walk around the shops. There’s a lot more to do there.”
6. What is something Spain and America have in common?
“The young people, we are so alike I think. We dress modern in Spain, we try to recreate what we see the American celebrities and young people wearing.”
7. What do you dislike about America?
“I don’t like peanut butter. I hate it, everything about it is just disgusting!”
8. If you could go back to Barcelona right now, would you?
“Hmm, no. If I had to choose between living in America for another year, and living in Spain, I would stay here for another year. I love it here.”

Hey Blab-squad! I am back to talk about the new Gracie Abrams album. I have been a huge fan since my sophomore year, and she has been one of my favorite artists ever since. Back then she had three albums which I religiously listened to. She got me through my first heartbreak, listening to her helped so much, especially since she had similar experiences. When I heard the news of her new album I was beyond excited.
My favorite songs on the album are “blowing smoke” and “I love you, I’m sorry.” To me they have the best lyrics and most value. I love how you can feel what she is singing. I love “blowing smoke” because she is asking questions and telling her side in a sense. “I love you I’m sorry" is like a sequel to “I miss you I’m sorry” which is my favorite song on minor (one of her other albums). An honorable mention is “Risk” which (fun fact) was the song she released before the album came out, it was like the song to describe the album before it was released. I think that song really shows what the albums are about. It sounds happy but has a deeper and kinda sad meaning. o be honest this album isn’t as good as some of her other albums.
On her other albums I love all of the songs while on this album I have some I don’t like as much. ‘Close to you’ isn’t one I would choose to listen to, I just think it is kinda boring. Another one I don’t like is “Gave You I Gave You I” I just didn’t vibe with it, it wasn’t my song. The last song I didn’t like was “Good Luck Charlie.” . I just thought it was really slow, while most of the other songs are faster and have a better message.
I made my friend listen and she gave good feedback even if we don’t share the same opinion on some songs. I made my friend listen and she gave good feedback even if we don’t share the same opinion on some songs.
“Blowing smoke is SO good. I love this song, I give it a 8/10. It’s very easy to listen to. The tempo and the instrumentals are so addicting,” senior music lover Allera Roberts said. I think her opinions are very well said, she has listened to lots of music from rap, Taylor Swift, Chappel Roan, and other artists. I definitely agree with the tempo and instrumentals being addicting, I think the blend of them is so perfect.
“I honestly liked ‘Good Luck Charlie,’ it wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t bad. I liked that it was sad.” Roberts said. While I don’t necessarily agree with her on this one, I just couldn’t listen to it, it was too slow for me but, I can agree that it is sad and definitely worth listening to if you like sad music.
Overall, it is a good album and it has some bangers, but I don’t think it was as good as her other albums. The other albums all had a similar feel and like you completely understood what she was going through, this album was harder for me to completely relate to, I’d give the album a solid 7/10.

Alurra Red AC, known as “Red 40,” is the enemy behind the beloved snacks you consume everyday. This dye is used in food and beverages because companies believe that it makes their product more appealing, brighter and eye-catching to us consumers. Food may look fun with this dye but the side effects aren't. Red 40 is linked to cancer, allergic reactions, DNA damage, digestive issues, hyperactivity, irritability and behavior issues.
“There are so many children in this world with ADHD, depression, anxiety and etc. that it makes you wonder how many of them are affected by this because they ingest so much of it, unknowingly,” said Kristin Clark, Hiawatha High School nurse. “The FDA may find that people do not ingest enough to make a difference, however, that is very hard to prove when there are so many things with Red 40, they cannot know how much any given person is taking into their body. Being petroleum based and containing such carcinogenic materials, how could it be safe? It's amazing that the FDA thinks, in any way, it could be safe to consume.”
Foods that contain Red 40 are banned in almost every European country due to health concerns. How many more signs do we need to show this dye is dangerous? You may ask, “If we take out this dye what will it do to the snacks we like?” Well, it will change nothing but the color. If companies decided to do this, they may lose sales to the “boring” color. This shows that companies don't care about your health, they care about money and fame. Red 40 is one of many synthetic dyes that keeps popping up on ingredient labels that many people don't know the danger behind.
“I feel like Red 40 should not be put in our food if it's causing effects like cancer. It's kind of scary because what else could be in our food that we don't know about,” said Clayton Handke, HHS student.
Some common foods that contain Red 40 are candy, cereal, ice cream, pastries, chips, fruit snacks, and even yogurt. Not only do these foods have Red 40, so do beverages. Dr Pepper, Gatorade, and Hawaiian Punch are just a little fraction of Red 40 that's out there.
Nobody should ever have to be this concerned about what is in children's favorite snacks. This dye has caused so much trouble but is still not talked about enough. We need to stop consuming so much of this riskful dye that is poison for our health. Start checking the ingredient labels for the list of artificial additives and it might just surprise you. We know this dye as Red 40 but should it be called, “Red 40-months off your life”?

Hiawatha High School has a recurring issue with both bathroom etiquette and personal hygiene, or lack thereof. In simple terms, etiquette is the practice of polite behavior in a society. Bathroom etiquette is a code of conduct that encourages the practice of clean and respectful behaviors when using the restroom. Personal hygiene is the practice of keeping your body clean and healthy to protect yourself from illness.
It is understood that not everyone has access to proper hygiene care such as showers, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products and other items; however, it is important to stay on top of what you have access to and ask the school nurse or a trusted adult for help to receive proper hygiene care.
Bathroom Etiquette
The first example of proper bathroom etiquette is washing your hands. After using the restroom or even touching the stall doors, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the spreading of germs or diseases.
A struggle for the students at HHS appears to be flushing the toilet. It is known that the toilets can become plugged or not flush as they should, but it is important to make sure that it all flushes or to report any kind of problem to the janitor when you notice it. Following this protocol can prevent clogging of the toilets and provide a cleaner space to use the restroom.
As gross as it may sound, people tend to leave bodily fluids on the toilet or even on the walls and floor. It is time that we as a society should grow up and stop being unsanitary. Whether it be a paper towel that missed the trash can, hair that is left in the sink, or puddles of water that refuse to be cleaned up, clean up after yourself. If you leave substances on the floor or don’t flush the toilet, it can cause the restroom to smell unpleasant.
“Sometimes, the bad odor impacts my ability to learn,” HHS Senior Maddie Keller said.
Furthermore, high school students are vandalizing bathrooms which is not only disrespectful but shows immaturity. Vandalism is the act of intentional damage to a property. School vandalism of any kind is illegal and could potentially result in discipline or even prosecution. Not only consequences, but one person vandalizing the bathrooms can result in the loss of bathroom privileges for every student that uses said restroom. The door becomes locked which is a major inconvenience.
Public restrooms are a hotspot for germs so it is important to minimize the amount of time you spend in them.
“I don’t understand why it is hard for 14 to 18-year-olds to get in the bathroom, do their business, and get out. It should not have to be a problem at this age. By trashing the bathroom, people are disrespecting the janitors who work very hard to keep them clean. Students are getting upset with their peers because of this behavior,” said HHS sophomore Pauly Rockey.
Restrooms are not a hangout spot to get on your phone, hit your vape, or meet up with friends; bathrooms are meant to be used properly and for using the restroom or washing your hands, not fooling around.
Hygiene
Personal hygiene is important for all individuals, especially those in their teenage years. Practicing proper hygiene can mean washing your hands often and when necessary. Handwashing does wonders when it comes to preventing the spread of infection to yourself and others.
A regular shower schedule is important for a healthy body as well as to reduce odor; howAever, not everyone has access to regular showers. If you do not have access to a shower, some ways to stay clean include deodorant and body spray for odor, dry shampoo for cleaner hair, a wipe down using a wet washcloth or baby wipes, and a change of clothes for sanitary and odor purposes. Hiawatha Walmart has a travel-size bottle of spray dry shampoo for as low as $2.97 without tax. Deodorant can usually be purchased for under four dollars. For your benefit and those around you, you must take care of yourself and keep up with proper hygiene practices.
Lastly, brushing your teeth decreases the chances of cavities, bad-smelling breath, gum disease, and tooth decay. As human beings, it is common to have some type of social interaction almost daily. For your sake and those around you, it is very important to brush your teeth and take care of your dental hygiene.
Proper bathroom etiquette and proper hygiene go hand in hand and are important to keep you and your environment sanitary. Before you consider not cleaning up after yourself in the bathroom, think of this article and the germs that you are spreading. Every day is a great day to practice good hygiene and proper bathroom etiquette.
