Today is Kansas’ birthday, so here are some facts about the best flat state there is. The average farm size in Kansas is 707 acres, which is just over 1 square mile of complete farmland per farm. Obviously, there are way bigger farms than that but the smaller farms pull down the average. The first people to settle in Kansas were here before it was called Kansas, 12,200 years ago, and hunted mammoths that roamed the area.
In 2017, there were an estimated 58,569 farms in Kansas, with a total of 46 million acres of farmland statewide. And if you were wondering why Kansas is called Kansas, it’s because it’s named after the Kansa Native American Tribe, which stood for “People of the Southern Wind”. We also rank first in the nation for all wheat production along with sorghum (milo).
New Year, new you, well maybe not a new you, but most people set goals for the new year. As we started a new semester I know I had several goals for myself and the classes I teach. One of my goals was to involve the Agriculture Leadership/Communication class in developing and maintaining a blog. I haven’t ever had a blog so we all get to learn together. The goal is to Agvocate (advocate for agriculture) and share about the Agriculture Education and FFA program.
The first two lines of the FFA Motto are “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn.” Tackling this idea of a blog is the motto coming to life. Students are aware of blogs and how often they are utilized but have not ever thought about starting their own. In fact, 77% of internet users read blogs, and blog use has grown by over 12% since 2012, according to an article about blog stats posted on the Optinmonster website. We did some research on popular blogs, such as Pioneer Woman, Dairy Carry, and a few others, and we all quickly realized that a blog was doable, but would take some organizing. I hope that this blog will grow in it’s following, the students will learn about a newer format of communicating and that we all “learn to do, while doing to learn.”
