College Composition

College Composition I & II are Burrton USD 369 concurrent enrollment classes offered through Hutchinson Community College (a dual credit option) for students in senior English. This means that students can register, pay, and earn credit for Composition I & II (EN 101 and 102). All seniors are welcome to apply for this class. Composition I & II DO NOT use the Acellus learning framework.

Entry Requirements

At least one of the following . . .

  • A passing AccuPlacer NG Writing Score of 255

  • A HS GPA of 3.0, or

  • An ACT English score of 20+

AccuPlacer tests can be administered by Mrs. Elliott in early August to any interested students who fail to meet the GPA or ACT requirements. Or, you can register to take an AccuPlacer test through one of the Hutchinson Community College Offices.

What are Composition I & II?

  • Course Descriptions from Hutch CC:

    • EN 101 (Comp I): Essentials of composition. Emphasis is placed on practice in writing expository paragraphs and themes and in using the techniques of research. Selected readings for models and criticism are used. Course Notes: Students must earn a grade of C or better to sequence to EN102.

    • EN 102 (Comp II): Development of critical reading and writing skills, through the exploration of literary texts in thematic units, with additional emphasis on research and persuasive writing.

Composition I is offered in the fall, and II is in the spring. In short: should your students apply for this class, pay for credit, and pass with a C or better, they will be earn college credit while in high school.

Important Notes

  1. Registration and payment must be finalized for college credit by Hutch CC’s deadline (usually within the first few weeks of class). You cannot change your mind later in the semester and purchase credit.

  2. Books MUST be purchased for this class (see above). These may be able to be resold.

  3. To be able to take Composition II in the spring, passing Composition I with a C or better is required. Both Composition I & II must be passed with Cs or better if you wish to earn the full 6 credit hours.

  4. While taught in a high school, this is a college course, and expectations are higher for students in this course than other hours during the day. Be prepared and aware. Payment for the course does not guarantee college credit. A FERPA waiver is required for parents to contact Mr. Whitman regarding their students’ progress in the course (if purchasing credit). By law, he cannot communicate with you about your students’ progress unless your student has given you permission and it is on file with the Hutch CC office. This includes conversations at parent-teacher conferences, phone calls, and any other means of communication.

Should your student not pay for concurrent college credit and not switch to a different hour of English, this is not a problem. The student can still earn credit for high school graduation (must pass with at least a D). However, it will still be a strictly run and highly-challenging course.
