James Edward Maceo West co-created the electric microphone. He is the reason you have the microphone on the earbuds you might have in right this moment. He is the reason American football officials can be heard. You would not be able to hear your music, cell phone calls, or videos. At 90, he is a research professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Check out this short interview about his amazing career and how his innovation continues to impact technology today. Black history is American history.

Diane Nash and Bree Newsome in Conversation

Diane Nash (1938) is one of the most successful American civil rights activists. Read more about her efforts and impact on human rights.

Bree Newsome (1985) is a musician, speaker, filmmaker, and activist. Her arrest after removing the Confederate flag from South Carolina's statehouse lead to its permanent removal! Read more about her activism here.

Join us for a fantastic author visit with Jim S. Hirsch and Zion Clark as they share the power of their new book Zion Unmatched.

About the Author Jim S. Hirsch - James S. Hirsch is an American journalist and author who has written about sports, race, and American culture. He was a reporter for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and his first book was the best-selling Hurricane: The Miraculous Journey of Rubin Carter

About Author and Athlete Zion Clark - Zion Clark is an African-American wrestler and a university student without legs. Clark is currently a Business Management student at Kent State University in Tuscarawas, New Philadelphia. He wrestles for the school’s wrestling team, plays the drums at church and video games at home with his best friend.

Clark is also preparing to be a world-class Olympian with his eyes on the 2020 Tokyo world Olympic games. He is popularly known as “No Excuses”. This name is well known since he has tattooed it on his back. He is too personal about his life.

Black Homesteaders: Audacious Dreams

Grades 3-8

The Homestead Act of 1862 provided African Americans with the prospect of farm ownership. Black homesteaders built successful farms from east to the west. Black homesteaders also created intentional communities like Audacious (and Nicodemus in Kansas. Lunch and Learn will have this story.) Explore the impact of this act beyond Bleeding Kansas.
