If your question is not answered fully, take a look at our FAQ page to find more detailed information.
What do we have to do at the audition?
For musical auditions: everyone will learn a little dance from our amazing choreographer, Sarah. The dance will be performed in groups. Next, auditioners will slate and perform their memorized monologue and song one by one in the auditorium.
For play auditions: auditioners will slate and perform a memorized 1 minute monologue one by one in the auditorium.
Do I have to have anything prepared for the audition?
Yes. For musicals we ask that you prepare:
+ a 1 minute monologue that matches the mood of the show, like comedic or dramatic.
+ 16 bars of a song
+ Sheet music for the accompanist. Mark the beginning and end of the part you will be singing.
For plays, we only need a monologue
Keep in mind, the monologue and song must be from a published play/musical.
Read the FAQs for more information.
Can someone help me find a monologue and song?
Yes.Ms. Wendel hosts an audition workshop that will guide you through the process of auditioning. Closer to the audition date, she will also be available after school on certain dates to help people find monologues and songs. Keep in mind that she is not in charge of providing sheet music. You will need to find that yourself.
What are callbacks? Do I need to prepare?
Callbacks are another chance for the directorial team to see what you can do. HOWEVER, even if you did or didn't make the callback list, it is not indicative of whether or not you are cast in the show. You do not need to prepare anything for callbacks, just show up as you!
What will rehearsal schedule be? I'm in sports, I work, etc, and I'm not sure I can do it.
Ms. Wendel will release a google form before auditions to ask people's availability. If enough people are in sports or other after school activities, she will make rehearsal later in the day. If not, rehearsal will generally run from 3:30-5:30. Look at the FAQs for an example schedule.
I have a song and monologue, what else do I need to do?
You need to fill out the audition and agreement forms filled out and signed by your parent or guardian. Audition forms are electronic and found in the Theatre google classroom. The purpose of the form is for you to tell us about yourself, your experience, and what type of role you are interested in. It's also where you let us know all of your potential rehearsal conflicts. The agreement form is paper and can be found inside Ms. Wendel's classroom.
Why does the agreement sheet have to be signed by my parents?
This is how we know you have their blessing to try and be a part of this large commitment. Our productions take a lot of time, effort, and a little money too, so we need to know that your parent/guardian support you on taking this on. It also allows you to make sure you understand the rules of respect we follow in our theatre.
Can I still audition without the agreement being signed by my parent?
You can audition, but WILL NOT BE CAST without the form being signed by a parent. Just fill out the form completely and get it signed to avoid any issues.
What if I will only accept certain roles, don't want a singing part, or have other role wishes?
This is where that handy dandy audition form comes in again. When filling it out, be honest and clear in what types of roles you do or do not want. You can say,"I will only accept a lead," or "I do not want anything with a solo or heavy dancing." We will try to honor whatever you put on your form as best we can. We appreciate knowing up front what your wishes are, but know that if you say you will only accept certain roles, that if it doesn't work out for you to have one of those roles, you will not be in the show.
What if I just want to be in tech, do I still have to audition?
Somewhat. If you are interested in being in a position of leadership, like stage manager or assistant stage manager, you will be interviewed. For more info, look at the FAQ page.
What are you looking for when someone auditions?
We never know exactly what we're looking for from show to show or part to part. The only constant is that we want you to entertain us. How do you do that? Have a lot of energy, personality, and confidence. Even if you're not a confident singer, just have fun with it. The same goes with the readings. Make big and bold character choices, don't hold back and HAVE FUN. If you have fun and go big we'll have fun and we'll want you on the stage making our audiences have fun.
