“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”~Christopher Robin
Course Description
Prerequisites for this course include successful completion of Algebra I (or the equivalent of Algebra I), Geometry, and Algebra II. This course is recommended for all college bound students.
The Trigonometry section of this course deals with the properties of right triangles and their application to science. Strong emphasis is also placed on the graphing of trigonometric functions and relations. The introduction of vectors and their properties and applications is included in this course.
The Pre-Calculus section of this course continues the study of vectors, solving simultaneous equations, graphing, application problem solving, and functions (exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric). The conic sections (equations and graphs), polar coordinates, limits, derivatives, and algebraic operation review are also discussed as a preparation for Calculus.
The mathematics curriculum is designed to teach students to be successful problem solvers. The building level 4-trait problem-solving model and also several types of thinking maps will be incorporated daily to assist with the instruction of problem solving. We will also incorporate reading and writing strategies to assist in successful reading comprehension and writing skills.
“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” ~ Albert Einstein
Academic Expectations
Students are expected to show up to class prepared, this includes bringing notebook, pencil, pens, paper, calculator, homework, book, and anything else we talk about in class.
Homework is due at the beginning of the hour. If there is any confusion or questions on the assignment, then students are expected to ask about those before school or after school the previous day. NO late work will be accepted.
Excused Absences: One day grace period for each day that you were absent.
Unexcused Absences: NO credit will be given for that day’s work or anything due that day. This is true for all assignments, included tests and projects.
School Activity Absences: Work must be turned in to me BEFORE you leave for the activity.
Parent Permission Absences: Usually, these absences will be treated like a school activity absence. I expect you to be communicating with me prior to these types of absences.
If you are absent from class, YOU are responsible for getting any notes or assignments missed. It is not my job to track you down and get you what you missed.
My contract day is from 8:00-4:00, however, I will try to be there before 8 in the morning most mornings. Students are encouraged to come talk to me before or after school to ask questions or get missed assignments. If you know you need help send me an email the day before or talk to me and I can make arrangements to get to school earlier.
Math class is for math, not finishing assignments for other classes. If students finish everything I have for them that day, then they may ask for permission to work on other assignments.
If students are working on math assignments in other classes without the instructor’s permission, then they will receive a zero for that assignment.
Cheating is NOT acceptable and will result in a zero for that assignment or test.
“When you make a mistake, admit it; learn from it and don’t repeat it.” ~ Bear Bryant
Behavior Expectations
When I am teaching I expect students to be taking notes and asking questions if confused. I won’t talk over others, so I expect there not to be any other conversations going on while I’m teaching.
No food or drinks, other than water, are allowed in the classroom unless I give permission.
Show respect to fellow students, teachers, administrators, and faculty.
We will be using different materials such as rulers, protractors, compasses, and calculators in the classroom for lessons. If you are using mine, then I expect you to respect the materials and use them appropriately.
Cell phones are to be turned off and put in backpacks before coming to class.
Computers are to be put away unless we are using them. NO games are to be played on computers and headphones are not allowed unless given permission.
Remote Learning
If we happen to have to go back to remote learning most of my rules will stay the same.
Late work won’t be accepted.
Cheating will result in a zero and I will contact both parents and Root.
All of your assignments will be posted on Google Classroom throughout the entire year so if we go remote that will be the same process.
Attendance will be taken for any zoom meetings we will have so students MUST attend to get credit.
Students will be expected to still come to class prepared with notes, book, pencil, paper, and anything else they might need.
How your grade is determined
Homework: 20 points
Quiz: 50 points
Test: 100 Points
Folder/Notes: 25 points
“Just because something is difficult doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, it just means that you should try harder.” ~ Unknown
People learn by doing, this is why we do practice problems and homework. There will be assigned problems after every lesson in order to allow you to apply the information you learned in class. It is critical that you do the problems after the lessons to be able to make sure you understand the concepts and can apply them to different situations.
If you are having problems with a concept, then I expect you to ask questions and come get help. I am here to help you and if you don’t ask i don’t know how to help. I have provided my email at the top on the front, so if there are any questions feel free to send me an email!
