Check out what some of our staff (who were former AVID students) have to say about AVID:

Claire Johnson

UMS Substitute Coordinator/ Discipline Secretary

I participated in AVID from 6th grade up to my freshman year of high school. I cannot stress how useful the weekly tutoring sessions were for me with my other classes. The extra tutoring helped with my homework, but also with being better prepared for my math class. I was able to have more questions ready to ask and be answered, it helped my grade immensely!

Jesse Worthington

UMS Student Relations Support (SRS)

My AVID experience began in 5th grade, the year 2000. From then, all the way up through high school, I learned how to be organized, how to take adequate notes, and the program prepared me for college! AVID changed my way of approaching a situation by using strategy and different tools to solve a problem. Today, I still use those skills gained in my daily processes. AVID was a rewarding very beneficial part of my life!

Jake Navarez

UMS 8th Grade Math Teacher

I was an AVID student in high school all four years. As the first in my family to go to college, AVID gave me an idea of what attending a four year university looked like. We toured schools like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, my alma mater (woot woot!), and learned about all the college jargon including loans, tuition, and room and board. As a former student beginning their college adventure, AVID gave me the necessary tools to make sure I was off to a successful start.
