Informational Sessions:

Dates & Times: Wednesday, Sep. 13 at 1:00 pm
Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 12:00 pm
Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 pm
Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 1:00 pm
Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 1:00 pm
Study at the University of Deusto across from the internationally acclaimed Guggenheim Museum in vibrant Bilbao, a cosmopolitan city famous for its green landscapes and nearby sandy beaches.
Immerse in the language, culture, and health system of Spain and take and pass the following courses for six (6) credits:
SPAN/HSC 306: Spanish for Health Care Workers (3 cr.). Led by USD Instructor Soto y Caballero de Galicia. Enrollment on Banner is required for this course. Pre-requisite: a solid base of skills up to SPAN 202, or equivalent.
SPAN 392: Spanish Topics on Conversation (3 cr.). A Deusto instructor teaches it. This course will transfer to USD as SPAN 392 or as SPAN 411, depending on student needs. To transfer as SPAN 392, the pre-requisite is SPAN 202, or equivalent; To transfer as SPAN 411 the pre-requisite: SPAN 320/SPAN 330, or equivalent.

Included Specialized Excursions:
3 days in Madrid & Toledo
1 day in San Sebastian
1 day in Gernika and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
Travel expenses, tickets to museums, hotel (3-day trip), and meals included

Guggenheim Museum
The Artxanda – Funicular and views over Bilbao
Getxo, Portugalete and the Bizkaia Suspension Bridge
Kayaks in the river of Bilbao
Program Dates: May 19 - June 15, 2024
Sun., May 19: Departure from the USA.
Mon., May 20: Arrival in Bilbao, Spain. Host families pick the students up at the airport.
Tue., May 21: First orientation session at the University of Deusto. Families will guide students to campus.
Wed., May 22: Classes Start.
Fri., June 14: Last day of classes. Farewell group lunch at a local restaurant.
Sat., June 15: Students leave their accommodation in the morning.
Housing:
Students live with host families:
The families live in Bilbao and its nearby suburbs (easy access through public transportation).
Family life integration, tuned as desired.
Individual room.
Three (3) meals a day.
Clothes washing.
Eligibility requirements:
Academic Standing: Good
Minimum GPA: 2.75
NOTE: This program is open to students of all majors and from any institution. Nonetheless, priority will be given to USD students.

Estimated Costs:
Student user charges: $4,741.25
Payable to USD for provider charge, lodging, meals, international insurance, application fee, and a contingency fee. This amount is contingent on the Euro exchange rate.
USD Tuition: $1,064.25
Payable to USD for the 3-credit hour course SPAN/HSC 306: Spanish for Health Care Workers.
Non-billable expenses: $1,950.00
Out-of-pocket estimate for airfare, books and supplies, passport, health information form, and personal expenses. This amount is contingent on the Euro exchange rate.

Arrival in Bilbao, Spain. Host families pick the students up at the airport
May 21
Morning - The group meets at the University of Deusto. Main entrance (Information desk at revolving doors). Families will guide students to the University. First orientation session
Afternoon - Orientation visit to the downtown area
Evening - Free time
May 22
Morning - Topics on Conversation - 8:30 - 11:00
Afternoon - Spanish for Health Care Workers - 11:30-14:00

May 25 - Weekend 1-Day Trip
Visit the town of Gernika, which inspired Picasso’s painting and became a universal symbol of peace. Students will learn about the bombing that destroyed most of this medieval town in 1937 by visiting the following landmarks:
Gernika’s Peace Museum
Assembly House and Tree of Gernika
Afternoon: Mundaka fishing port and/or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

3-day trip to Madrid and Toledo. The group will be accompanied by Deusto instructors. Travel expenses, tickets to museums, hotel, and meals included

Bus tour guided visit to Palacio Real.
Guided Visit to Madrid de los Austrias and Palacio Real
Guided visit to Museo del Prado
Toledo: Panoramic visit and guided visit to the town.
