The Chiesman Center funds and supports research and civic education that address the issues of democracy, democratic principles, and civic engagement.
We welcome proposals for education, engagement, or research funding that specifically address one or more of these purposes.
Proposals of 2-3 pages should include:
A detailed description of the educational, engagement, or research project
A brief explanation of its importance
An anticipated timeline for completion
A detailed budget for all project expenses and other sources of funding (your budget does not count against your proposal page limit)

Proposals from South Dakota K-12 and post-secondary educators for educational projects on a rolling basis. Non-profit organizations designing materials or programs for K-12 schools are also eligible. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Expected awards will range from $500 to $2000. Read the Call for Proposals for details.
Proposals from nonprofit organizations and groups for civics-related initiatives, such as engagement, voter education, and voter turnout. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Expected awards will range from $500 to $2000. Read the Call for Proposals for details.
Proposals for research projects related to democracy, democratic principles, civic education and engagement. Please read the Call for Proposals for details on allowable purposes. Research Awards are expected to be in amounts of up to $2500, although compelling and/or co-authored larger projects may be considered. Proposals are accepted three times each year, with funding beginning at the start of the following academic semester. Recipients will be required to submit a brief project report upon project completion and may be asked to present their results at upcoming Chiesman Conferences.
