The Chiesman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota will host the 2026 Chiesman Center for Democracy Conference on April 9, 2026, bringing together students, scholars, public officials, and community members for a day of discussion on civic engagement and the state of American democracy. As South Dakota’s leading institute dedicated to promoting civic participation and public dialogue, the Center’s annual conference provides a space for thoughtful conversation about democratic institutions, leadership, and civic life. This year’s event will feature a keynote address by Steve Jarding along with panel discussions, including a conversation connected to the upcoming America 250 anniversary, examining the past, present, and future of democracy in the United States.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
steve Jarding
We are excited to announce Steve Jarding as our keynote speaker for this year’s conference. Mr. Jarding will explain why democracy needs a new generation of leaders who can communicate and connect with people more effectively than ever before. Drawing on a communication paradigm he developed and taught to thousands of students at Harvard and professionals in more than 50 countries, he will highlight the essential role that emotion and passion play in effective communication. His presentation also focuses on overcoming three key hurdles every speaker must address: establishing credibility, believability, and likability.
Jarding’s training introduces practical techniques that help participants succeed in speeches, presentations, interviews, and debates. The program includes instruction on body language, vocal delivery, and strategic word usage to make messages more engaging and persuasive. His communication model has been recognized globally—including by the World Government Summit—and he has worked with presidents, prime ministers, Nobel Prize winners, and leaders across business, academia, and government.
